Here in Goodhue County, we have all kinds of dams, from large structures like Lake Byllesby near Cannon Falls, to the many earthen dams throughout our local watersheds, and even Lock & Dam 3 along the Mississippi River.
Each dam is built differently, serves a different purpose, and comes with its own unique hazards. Some create strong currents and undertows, others can change water levels quickly, and earthen dams may not always look dangerous at first glance.
Whether you live near a dam, fish near one, kayak past one, or just enjoy spending time on the water, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the potential hazards around it.
Remember:
Water doesn’t need to be deep to be dangerous
Warning signs and buoys are there for a reason
“Restricted Area” does not mean “great fishing spot”
Currents near dams can overpower even strong swimmers and boaters
We want everyone to enjoy Minnesota’s lakes and rivers safely this summer. A little awareness today can prevent a tragedy tomorrow.
