Quick question: does your pet have a Go Bag?

Food, water, a leash or carrier, any medications, and vet records. Pack it now and keep it by the door or in your car. Wildfire doesn't wait for you to think of it later.

Have you heard of the Defensible Space Readiness Program?

This is a free service that sends trained crews out to clear vegetation on your property, but it's not for just anyone. It's built for a specific group: low-income, elderly, disabled, and veteran property owners in unincorporated Shasta County who live on their property and have already received a defensible space citation.

If that sounds like you, don't wait. Funding is limited, and it's first-come, first-served.

Firefighters can't be everywhere at once. Inspectors can't clear your yard for you. At the end of the day, the person with the most power over your property's wildfire risk is you.

That's not meant to scare you. It's meant to put you in the driver's seat. A cleared yard, a trimmed tree line, and a maintained generator zone do more to protect your home than almost anything else available to you right now.

Shasta County Ordinance No. SCC 2025-03 lays out exactly what's required if you're in an unincorporated area. Even if you're not, the same steps make your home safer.
