Our partners are a big part of what we do to improve access and experiences on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Today we want to highlight the Northern California Council of Fly Fishers International, whose work at the Ah-Di-Na Campground has exemplified the best in what our volunteer partnerships can be.

Volunteer efforts improved campsites, decreased potential nuisance bear activity, and improved access to the McCloud River.

Fifty-six volunteers contributing more than 1,200 hours in fall 2025 and spring 2026:

• Replaced all toilets and sinks, cleaned and painted the bathrooms, and installed solar lights
• Replaced the roof on the main bathroom
• Pumped two septic tanks, with 2,000 gallons of waste removed
• Replaced damaged picnic tables and fire rings at all 17 campsites
• Cleared campsites of overgrowth and debris
• Cleared three major trails out of the campsite of obstacles and debris
• Prepared bear box sites, building frames, pouring concrete, and setting three bear boxes

Participating fly fishing organizations included:

• Northern California Council, Fly Fishers International
• Chico Area Flyfishers
• Delta Fly Fishers Inc.
• Diablo Valley Fly Fishing Club
• Gold Country Fly Fishers
• Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club
• Grizzly Peak Fly Fishers
• Mount Tamalpais Fly Fishers
• Russian River Fly Fishers
• Peninsula Fly Fishers
• Salinas Valley Fly Fishers
• Santa Cruz Fly Fishing Club
• Fly Casters of San Jose
• Trout Unlimited

The Forest Service is grateful to these hard-working volunteers, whose efforts at Ah-Di-Na have made the campground a better place for all of us.

In early May, the Shasta-Trinity National Forest played host to the California Wilderness Ranger Academy.

The academy began at the Tannery Gulch campground on the shores of Trinity Lake and continued in other areas of the forest.
Sessions covered in the academy included crosscut saw sharpening demonstrations and certifications, pack stock training, backcountry navigation, dry-stone masonry, wilderness first-aid and more.

Partners included the Bureau of Land Management - California, Ascend Wilderness Experience, Capital City CPR , Bigfoot Trail Alliance, JMT Wilderness Conservancy, Los Padres Forest Association, Pacific Crest Trail Association, Scott River Watershed Council, Ventana Wilderness Alliance, and The Watershed Research and Training Center.

We appreciate all those who attended, our partners, and their commitment to our wilderness areas!

Shasta Lake hosted the annual Memorial Day college gathering of students from UC Davis and the University of Oregon.

Students gathered at Slaughterhouse Island for the traditional outing. There were about 150 houseboats supporting 2,500 students.

A good time was had by all, with no injuries and the students left the island clean. Thank you students, and we look forward to hosting you next year.

🔥PRESCRIBED FIRE NOTICE🔥

The Shasta-Trinity National Forest will begin burning operations at Hayward Flat Campground on Trinity Lake starting Wednesday, May 27.

The Forest Service will be using an air curtain burner to remove fuels from the campground that resulted from recent forest thinning operations there. In addition to the air curtain burner, Forest Service personnel and heavy equipment will be present at the campground.

Operations will continue through June. The campground, which was opened for the Memorial Day weekend, will close until June 9. Portions of the campground will be closed until work is completed. Watch for warning signs along roads, workers and heavy machinery near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.

🔥FINAL UPDATE – SISTERS FIRE🔥

Firefighters on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest have declared the Sisters Fire controlled and out. Resources assigned to the incident, including the Shasta Lake Hotshots and personnel from Helitack 506, have safely hiked out of the rugged Trinity Alps Wilderness and have been released from the incident.

The Sisters Fire remained small thanks to an aggressive initial attack from both the air and ground, along with the dedication, skill, and hard work of Shasta-Trinity National Forest firefighters. Operating in steep, remote, and challenging terrain, firefighters worked tirelessly over several days to build line, conduct mop-up operations, and patrol the area to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

As visitors continue enjoying the Memorial Day weekend on their National Forest lands, we remind everyone to recreate responsibly and practice fire safety. One small spark can have serious consequences, especially as conditions continue to dry across Northern California.

Thank you to all of the firefighters and support personnel who helped keep this fire small and protected the Trinity Alps Wilderness.

As we observe Memorial Day today, we pause to honor the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country.

Originally known as “Decoration Day,” this day began after the Civil War as communities gathered to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. Today, it stands as a national tribute to all who made the ultimate sacrifice, reminding us that our freedoms are not inherited, but earned and protected.

For many of us, this day is personal.

Across the Forest Service and here on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, we work alongside veterans, active-duty service members, and families who understand that sacrifice. Many have worn the uniform, and some carry the memory of those who never came home.

Our mission is tied to that legacy. The lands we steward here on the Shasta-Trinity, more than two million acres, exist because generations fought to protect not only our freedoms, but the landscapes that define this country. The work we do every day, protecting communities, restoring ecosystems, and serving the public is part of that commitment.

Today is not simply a long weekend. It is a moment to reflect. To remember. And to honor those who gave everything. Take a moment today to reflect on the true meaning of this day.

Firefighters continue to make strong progress on the Sisters Fire burning in the Trinity Alps Wilderness on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The fire remains at approximately 1/4 acre, and firefighters have line around the fire. Crews continue mop up operations and are patrolling the area for any potential roll out due to the steep, rugged terrain where the fire is located.

Today, members of Helicopter 506 supported firefighters on the ground by sling loading additional supplies and multiple blivets into the fire area to help speed up mop up operations and support crews working in the remote terrain.

Firefighters from the Shasta Lake Hotshots will remain on the fire overnight and are expected to hike out tomorrow evening, while Helicopter 506 will continue supporting operations and assist with sling loading gear out of the area.

This small fire is another example of the aggressive initial attack efforts by Shasta-Trinity National Forest firefighters and aviation resources working together in some of the most difficult terrain in Northern California.

As Memorial Day weekend continues, we remind all forest visitors to stay safe, remain aware of fire conditions, and help us protect these public lands for everyone to enjoy.

Firefighters continue to make strong progress on the Sisters Fire burning in the Trinity Alps Wilderness near Backbone Ridge. Thanks to the hard work and determination of crews on the ground, the fire remains approximately 1/2 acre tonight.

Earlier this evening, members of Helitack 506 completed a sling load operation to deliver provisions and supplies to firefighters who remain assigned to the incident in extremely rugged terrain. Firefighters from the Shasta Lake Hotshots and the 506 Helitack crew will continue staffing the fire overnight, working to strengthen containment lines and monitor fire activity.

The steep, remote landscape continues to present challenges, but the dedication and professionalism of Shasta-Trinity National Forest firefighters have kept this fire small through aggressive action both from the air and on the ground.

As Memorial Day weekend continues, we ask all visitors enjoying the forest to stay safe, remain aware of their surroundings, and remember that wildland firefighters and emergency personnel are actively working across the forest to protect both communities and natural resources.
