Compost doesn’t just give nutrients to your plants - it helps them retain water, too. By acting like a sponge, compost can absorb and store large amounts of moisture, making it available to plant roots when they need it most, especially on hot summer days in Redding.

Sandy soil drains too quickly, causing water to drain straight through without providing the necessary hydration some plants need. Adding compost adds texture and organic matter that help slow the water down and keep it from escaping.
Clay soil becomes compacted and is prone to puddling, which can suffocate delicate roots. Compost breaks up the heavy, dense structure, creating tiny air pockets that allow water to soak in and drain properly instead of pooling on the surface.

If you need compost for your garden, be sure to visit the City of Redding Solid Waste Utility’s FREE compost pile, available for pick up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as supply allows on the corner of Viking Way and Old Oregon Trail in Redding, across from the Redding Sports Park. The compost must be self-loaded. Please remember to bring your own shovel. The supply will be replenished weekly for the foreseeable future.

This year's Captains Academy brings together both newly promoted and aspiring Fire Captains from the RRedding Fire Department Here is a look at some of the roles and responsibilities of a supervising officer at the fire station and in the broader community as Incident Commander in emergency scenarios. Congratulations to every firefighter who is working toward a leadership position within the Redding Fire Department.

Redding Fire Department 2026 Captains Academy

This year's Captains Academy brings together both newly promoted and aspiring Fire Captains from the Redding Fire Department.

As the supervising officer at the fire station, the Fire Captain plays a critical leadership role. They are responsible for the health, safety, and well-being of their crew, the readiness of their station, and the operational effectiveness of their apparatus.

As a public-facing leader, the Fire Captain represents the department within the community they serve. They also serve as the Incident Commander on emergency scenes until relieved by a Battalion Chief, making critical decisions in dynamic and often high-stress situations.

The Captains Academy is designed to prepare these leaders for the challenges and responsibilities of one of the most important positions in the fire service.
