While the Redding Library is undergoing its refresh, our bookstore will be closed and our giant “First Saturday” book sales will be paused. We will keep you posted on reopening/restart dates. We’re looking forward to seeing our updated Library AND connecting with our supporters again!!
The Redding Public Library, part of the Shasta Public Libraries system, will be closed from Friday, August 1st, through Monday, August 4th. When the library reopens on Tuesday, August 5th, only the Community Room will be open, as the remainder of the flooring is replaced throughout the building.
The brief closure will allow the library time to relocate materials and equipment into the Community Room and ensure everything is set up for continued modified service, which is anticipated through the end of October or early November.
The project cost will total $798,000, which includes the design process, staff time, materials, and contractors. The carpet in the building is 18 years old, originally installed when the building opened in 2007.
“The City applied for and received grant funding from the California State Library’s Building Forward Grant for the carpet replacement. Despite the impacts, library maintenance and improvement funds are limited, so staff is taking the opportunity to use the funds for this project while they are available,” says Travis Menne, Director of Community Services.
The grant process initially began in 2023, and after the documents, designs, and plans were in place, the City put the project out to bid earlier this year. The project was postponed from earlier this year to the beginning of August due to material lead times and a tight timeline for installation between when the contractor was onboarded and when the library would begin summer reading programs.
“We wanted to avoid any impacts to the library’s Summer Reading Program, an essential part of community literacy, so we pushed the carpet replacement project back to the end of summer, instead of the beginning. Additionally, there were material delays that would have put us into that challenging window, so it made sense all around to move it back,” says Menne.
During the modified service, the Redding Library will provide a small browsing collection, holds pickup, a public printer, and access to public computers through the Community Room. The temporary library hours, anticipated through the end of October or early November, will be Monday – Friday, 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM, and Saturday – Sunday, 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM.
While some of the library will be reorganized and repurposed, the setup will largely remain the same to ensure a comfortable experience for patrons.
“We look forward to an exciting refresh for the Redding Library. It’s an incredible resource for the community and is worthy of this investment in its future,” says Menne.
