Did you know that motorists are responsible for many of the wildfires that start along our roadways? Drivers often don't realize their vehicle is the cause of the fire until it's too late.

Don’t start a fire while trying to tow this holiday weekend! Keep these safety tips in mind before you hit the road:

🛻🔥Conduct a thorough inspection, including tire condition, tire pressure, lights, and brakes

🛻🔥Make sure your tow chain doesn’t drag. As an added safety measure, cover those chains

🛻🔥Know your weight limits

🛻🔥Use proper towing techniques

🛻🔥Be a defensive driver

🛻🔥Maintain a proper speed. The higher the speed, the longer it takes to stop the vehicle

🛻🔥Be weather aware. Windy, wet or icy conditions require adjusted techniques

🛻🔥Avoid parking on dry grass

Tomorrow, Thursday, May 14, is the last chance for Door Yard Burning before it closes in the City of Redding on Friday, May 15. The Door-Yard permit, available for residential use, allows you to burn a maximum 4’ pile. Please follow all burn day and safety regulations.

Remember that although it may be a permissive burn day, weather conditions can change and make burning unsafe. Call 530-224-8777 after 9:15 am and listen to the daily updated message on whether or not it’s a permissive burn day. In order to mitigate the deterioration of air quality, the Shasta County Air Quality Management District has published guidelines for open burning that can be found at https://www.shastacounty.gov/air-quality/page/burn-day-information.

On designated burn days in the City of Redding, fires may be ignited between 10 am and 3 pm and fires must be out by 5 pm.

Wildfire Season is coming. Simple, low-cost changes can help reduce the impacts of wildfire on your home and neighborhood. Here are 10 ways to increase your wildfire readiness.

Take action to improve your home’s survivability:

🔥REMOVE leaves, pine needles, and other flammable materials from your roof, gutter, and deck.

🔥SCREEN the area below your deck or porch with ⅛” wire mesh to keep flammable material from accumulating underneath.

🔥COVER exterior attic and soffit vents with ⅛” mesh to keep flammable material out.

🔥ENCLOSE eaves to prevent embers from entering your home.

🔥INSPECT shingles or roof tiles and REPLACE anything that is missing or damaged. COVER the ends of tiles with bird stops or cement to prevent embers from penetrating your roof.

Be Wildfire Wise when it comes to landscaping

🔥REMOVE dead vegetation and any other materials within five feet of your home, known as the Home Ignition Zone (HIZ)

🔥KEEP your lawn properly hydrated. If it’s brown, mow it down.

🔥PRUNE trees so that the lowest limbs are 6 to 10 feet above the ground.

▪ Weather Conditions Allow Extended Door Yard Burning in the City of Redding ▪

The City of Redding Fire Department is extending the Burn Season due to wet spring conditions, cooler weather, and favorable fuel moisture content. Door yard burning will remain allowed until further notice.

Residents who have not yet completed fire mitigation on their property are encouraged to take advantage of this extended window.

“This is a great opportunity to finish up your fire mitigation efforts on your property and burn your piles before the hot weather sets in and these activities are no longer allowed,” said Jay Sumerlin, Deputy Fire Chief for the City of Redding.

Door yard burn permits are free and available online through the Redding Fire Department. All residents must follow permit requirements, including allowable burn days, material restrictions, and safety precautions. Visit cityofredding.gov/burnpermit for more information and to download.

The Fire Department will continue to monitor conditions and notify the community when burning is discontinued.

Door-yard burning in Redding typically runs from mid-October through April each year, depending on weather and air quality conditions.
