🏨🔥 THE HOTEL DUNSMUIR: A CENTURY-OLD LANDMARK, HAUNTED LEGENDS & THE FINAL RESTING PLACE OF ABNER W**D 👻🌲

Did you know one of Dunsmuir’s most historic buildings has a connection to Abner W**d, the founder of the town of W**d CA? 🤯

Before it became Hotel W**d, the site was home to the Mount Shasta Hotel. In April 1903, a devastating fire swept through Dunsmuir, destroying much of the business district, including the original hotel. 🔥

After the fire, Abner W**d purchased the property and built a new landmark — Hotel W**d, which was completed in 1904. The grand four-story brick hotel featured 102 rooms, a dining room, bar, lobby, office, and basement, becoming an important gathering place during Dunsmuir’s railroad and timber boom. 🏨✨

Over the years, the hotel went through many changes, including another major fire that led to its reconstruction in the 1940s Art Deco style we recognize today. It reopened in 1947 and continues to be one of Dunsmuir’s most recognizable historic buildings.

But the history doesn’t stop there… 👻✨ Over the years, Hotel Dunsmuir has also become known for its haunted legends. Visitors and storytellers have shared tales of unexplained footsteps, voices, and ghostly sightings throughout the building. Whether you believe in ghosts or just love a good mystery, these stories have become another fascinating chapter in the history of this more than 100-year-old landmark.

The hotel’s haunted reputation even inspired a horror movie based on the legends surrounding the building. 🎬👻 I watched the film myself, and while the idea of bringing this historic location to the screen was interesting, the actual movie was a complete let down, and had nothing to do with the hotel. It also included nudity and adult content that viewers may want to be aware of.

One of the most fascinating facts about Abner W**d? Although he founded the town that carries his name, he was buried in Dunsmuir — the very town where his hotel stood — instead of the community he founded. 🌿

From fires and rebuilds to railroad history and local legends, this building has been part of Dunsmuir’s story for more than a century. ❤️ Preserving places like this helps keep our Northern California history alive.

Thank you for supporting local history.
