This week, we joined ranchers, researchers, conservation leaders, law enforcement, and state and federal officials for the Sierra Valley Wolf, Wildlife, and Landscape Management Tour. 🐺

We discussed the growing challenges of wolf depredation, deer population declines, wildfire resilience, habitat restoration, and the future of working landscapes in rural California. The key takeaway was that successful wildlife management must balance conservation goals with the needs of ranching families and local communities!

Thank you for coming to AD1 to learn firsthand what’s happening on the ground-

🌲California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot
🌲CA Dept of Food & Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross

Did you buy a grapevine at a Northern California Costco between April 21 & May 19?

New counties have been added to the list of affected areas. The invasive glassy-winged sharpshooter has been found on grapevines sold at these locations. This pest is a serious threat to vineyards, backyard gardens & other plants.

It’s House of Origin week! 🙌🏻 That means that all of the Assembly bills have to be voted on to move to the Senate and all of the Senate bills voted in their house to get over to the Assembly by Friday! Then we start the committee process over and work the bill on the other side! So far we have 11 bills still moving forward!

We will have session every day this week! Today was almost 12 hours on the floor voting on 125 bills!

This month, California Forest Foundation hosted the 31st Annual Forest Tour in the beautiful Lake Almanor Basin in Plumas County, bringing together elected officials and leaders from California’s forest industry for two days of hands-on learning and collaboration.

Joining the tour were legislators Senator Megan Dahle, retired Senator Brian Dahle, Senator Laura Richardson, Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas, Assemblywoman Maggy Krell, Assemblymen Isaac G. Bryan, and Assemblymen Tom Lackey.

The tour included visits to fire-affected landscapes, live prescribed fire demonstrations, meadow restoration projects, and the Collins Pine Company sawmill, offering participants a firsthand look at the importance of active forest management and rural stewardship. Special thanks to Collins Pine Company, Sierra Pacific Industries, and W.M. Beaty and Associates for opening their doors and sharing their commitment to healthy forests and strong rural communities.

Bringing colleagues from across the state to Northern California is incredibly important. Many legislators represent urban districts and may not regularly experience the unique challenges and opportunities facing rural communities. Tours like this provide meaningful, hands-on learning that helps showcase why Northstate communities value our working forests, natural resources, and way of life — and why protecting them matters not only to rural California, but to the entire state.

Last week, I had the honor of participating in the 9-1-1 Heroes event at the Capitol to recognize outstanding public safety dispatchers and celebrate the vital work of 9-1-1 education programs.

We presented Certificates of Recognition to Nicole Harrington, Melissa Dube, Mindy Whitney, and members of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office for their exceptional calm under pressure, decisive communication, and bravery during two critical incidents in the Lake Tahoe region when weather conditions changed rapidly and dangerous 8–10 foot swells hit the lake.

Their professionalism, composure, and dedication helped save lives during some of the most difficult moments the Lake Tahoe community has faced. While the incidents were tragic, the actions of these dispatchers and first responders made an incredible difference for so many families.

We were also honored to hear inspirational remarks from Tim Brown about leadership, resilience, and service. 🚔☎️👏 This event is one of my favorites and the day was even better with a visit from our local dispatchers from all over NorCal and getting to see my old CalOES friend Mike Beckstrand!

Dispatchers are often the unseen heroes behind emergency response — the calm voice during chaos and the critical link between people in crisis and the help they desperately need. Proud to support our dispatchers for the second year in a row by welcoming 9-1-1 Heroes to the Capitol!

Sheriff McGarva has dedicated his career to protecting and serving the people of Lassen County with professionalism, leadership, and commitment to his community. We are grateful for the sacrifices made not only by our law enforcement officers, but also by their families who stand beside them through the challenges of the job.

Last week, we celebrated World Agritourism Day in California by passing ACR 167 on the Assembly Floor! 🌾🚜

Agritourism is more than just a fun family outing — it keeps family farms alive, supports rural economies, preserves our agricultural heritage, and connects people to where their food comes from. From pumpkin patches and farm stays to wineries, u-pick farms, ranch tours, festivals, and farmers markets, agritourism showcases the very best of rural California.

This resolution is especially meaningful to me because our family owns a pumpkin patch, and we truly love being part of people’s family memories and traditions. Watching kids pick pumpkins, families take photos, and generations come together on the farm is one of the best parts of what we do.

I was honored to recognize some incredible leaders in the agritourism industry on the Assembly Floor including:

🌻Penny Leff — Retired UC Statewide Agritourism Coordinator

🌻Rachel Callahan -UC Statewide Agritourism Coordinator

🌻Shannon Douglass — CA Farm Bureau President

🌻Sarah Ansell- California Food & Agriculture

🌻Justin Miller- Owner, Twin Peaks Orchard

California agriculture feeds the world, but agritourism helps tell the story behind it. Proud to celebrate the farms and ranches that open their gates, share their way of life, and help keep rural communities thriving! 🐄🍎
