POAM represents the Detroit EMS supervisors and paramedics fighting to have their medical authority respected on emergency calls. State law is clear on who directs care at the scene, and a March 2026 arbitrator's order confirmed it. The Detroit Fire Department has not complied, and POAM has tracked more than 5,000 incidents since January 2025 where Code 1 patients received a lower level of care as a result.

"Michigan law is clear, and an arbitrator has already ruled on it. Compliance is not optional," said POAM President James Tignanelli.

Joe Blozis had just finished an 18-hour shift with the NYPD Crime Scene Unit when the call came on September 11, 2001. He spent the next eight months processing what he calls the world’s largest homicide scene, an investigation that, through DNA identification, still brings closure to families today.
