On the morning of Monday, July 15th, King Harbor Yacht Club (KHYC) and USCGAUX Flotilla 12-05 “Beach Cities” were privileged and honored to host a visit with Rachel, Miller and Wells Horne, the family of fallen USCG SCPO Terrell Horne III. They were able to see (and touch!) the recently installed HALIBUT and Reinhardt Room plaques at KHYC. During the Horne’s visit, Rachel, representing their oldest son Kade - who was not able to attend - and sons Miller and Wells, were presented miniaturized versions of the HALIBUT plaque as keepsakes for this occasion. KHYC Vice Commodore James Lee, Staff Commodore Mark Hanson and General Manager Mike Hyler were joined by Mayor Jim Light of the City of Redondo Beach, as well as USCGAUX Members John Carroll (12-05 Former Flotilla Commander), Steven Csik (12-05 Flotilla Commander), Grant Graves (Div. 12 Commander), and Nora Harris (Flotilla 12-76), who was instrumental in “re-igniting” this project in the spring of 2023. USCG Auxiliarist Angelo Skiparnias (Auxiliary Unit Coordinator – USCGC TERRELL HORNE) escorted the Horne family and was central in coordinating their visit to KHYC.

The plaques were a very special development project for Flotilla 12-05 that involved a great deal of collaboration between several organizations and individuals. They were presented as part of our recent Division 12 Change of Watch this past April. The HALIBUT plaque describes the heroic and tragic events that led to the loss of USCG Senior Chief Petty Officer (SCPO) Terrell Horne III early in the morning on December 2nd, 2012.

Many yeas ago, KHYC was gifted the one of the USCGC HALIBUT name boards that was attached to the Cutter’s superstructure. Until the recent plaque installations at KHYC, there was no “story” or meaning attached that honored SCPO Horne or the special relationship with the HALIBUT. It was our goal to recognize SCPO Terrell Horne for his excellence, leadership, selfless patriotism, loyal friendship, and devotion to duty, as well as being an inspiration and guardian for his family, shipmates, friends and all who needed assistance.

King Harbor Yacht Club proudly displays the HALIBUT name board as a measure to honor the life, ultimate sacrifice and legacy of Senior Chief Terrell Horne as well as to commemorate the special relationships between KHYC, USCG and USCGAUX.

Flotilla 12-05 had a busy May. On the first weekend of the month members set up an information table at the Women's Sailing Conference at KHYC. On the next weekend, members set up a table at the Redondo Union High School aquatic event to promote water safety, followed by a table at West Marine in Hermosa Beach. Flotilla members also provided support that weekend to the Auxiliary at the Armed Forces weekend in Torrance. On Fleet Week, held on the Memorial Day weekend, our Flotilla Commander, Stephen Csik, provided tours of the USCGC TERRELL HORNE. He was instrumental in helping Roy Payan, visually impaired and a nationally recognized Disabled Policy advocate, tour the ship by allowing him to use his tactile sense to feel the different textures and surfaces of various elements of the ship. Our flotilla members are doing what they can to promote water safety and awareness of what the Coast Guard and the Auxiliary can do for the community.

📢 Exciting News for National Safe Boating Week! 🌊🚤

We are thrilled to announce that The City of Manhattan Beach has officially declared May 18-24, 2024, as National Safe Boating Week! On behalf of the City Council and residents, Mayor Joe Franklin, assisted by City Clerk Liza Tamura, presented proclamations to Coast Guard Auxiliary 12-05 “Beach Cities” and Division 12 during a ceremony at City Hall. Representing 12-05, Flotilla Commander Steven Csik had the honor of receiving the proclamation alongside Division 12 Commander Grant Graves.

This proclamation is a vital reminder to all boating enthusiasts to practice safe boating habits, become better educated, care for passengers, and always wear a properly fitting Personal Flotation Device. Let's make this boating season a safe and enjoyable one for everyone!

📸 Check out the images of the proclamation below and feel free to stop by any of our upcoming Flotilla events to see it in person.

🚩 Upcoming Events:

Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade: Kicks off this Friday morning and runs through Sunday afternoon.

LA Fleet Week: Starts Wednesday, May 22nd (Neighborhood Activations: May 22-25), with the Expo from May 24-27. This year, we’re excited to host an Aircraft Carrier for the first time in 13 years, along with the thrilling “Galley Wars”!

If you're interested in participating in any of these events, please contact Steven Csik (626-419-5979) as soon as possible with your availability. A big thank you to all members who have already volunteered to help make these events a success!

On April 14 Division 12 held its annual Change of Watch at the King Harbor Yacht Club. Several of our flotilla members received awards for their service to the Auxiliary and the boating public. Barbara De Cuir rang a bell once for each member who had recently passed away. Among the guests was James Lee, the Vice Commadore of the King Harbor Yacht Club (in white uniform). The purpose of this short course is to familiarize the student with essential safety information so they can assess and stabilize the situation, operate the vessel and summon any required assistance.
