Some Wild Mushrooms are Deadly!

2026 has continued to see substantial fruiting of the deadly Death Cap and Western Destroying Angel mushrooms throughout California, including San Mateo County Parks. Mushroom foraging is not allowed in our parks and we urge you not to pick and eat any wild mushrooms during this high-risk season.
Poisonous Death Cap mushrooms and Western Destroying Angel mushrooms, both of which are easily mistaken for mushrooms that look safe to eat, can cause severe liver damage and death. No amount of cooking, boiling or drying makes these mushrooms safe. These mushrooms are often found near trees such as oaks and pines and also pose a risk to pets that may ingest them while outdoors.

May is Forest Health Month! At Pescadero Creek County Park, crews have been working hard to implement ecologically restorative forest health and fuels reduction treatments on approximately 541 acres. General treatments include mechanical mastication and handwork, which will reduce the density of understory vegetation, ladder fuels, and dead, dying and diseased trees to improve biodiversity and resiliency against wildfire, drought, pests, and climate change. So far over 60 acres of the project have been completed! You can see the progress with the before and after images of work throughout the park.

This project is funded by a CAL FIRE Forest Health Grant and is implemented in partnership with the San Mateo Resource Conservation District and San Mateo County Parks. For more information about the project: https://www.smcgov.org/parks/pcp-climate-habitat-resiliency
