"A shout-out to everyone in our communities who drives extra safely around schools, volunteers as a tutor or coach, takes the time to check in with neighborhood youth, and supports our schools in countless ways.

It takes more than a village to support our children; it takes a whole county. While there is always work to do, San Mateo County has made meaningful strides to become a more child-centric community. Here are just a few highlights:"

• The Coalition for Safe Schools and Communities launched United for Youth in partnership with more than 20 public agencies and community-based organizations. The initiative focuses on improving youth behavioral health.

• With wide approval, the Ravenswood community taxed itself to fund the expansion of affordable preschool and early childhood education.

• Approved by the Board of Supervisors in June 2026, the San Mateo County Childcare Central Initiative commits $10 million toward a centralized child care navigation portal and a cost-sharing pilot.

• Several cities and the county have established 15-mph zones around schools. "
