Connect Community Charter School A social-emotional and project-based learning Charter School for Redwood City, CA

Connect Community Charter School is a free, non-selective, public K-8 charter school that opened in the fall of 2013 in Redwood City. Our mission is to prepare all of our children to be change makers in the world, and we will do this by supporting their social-emotional development and critical and creative thinking skills in a nurturing and caring community.

We are excited to announce that Connect is getting a rain barrel!

On Wednesday, May 6, Flows to Bay will be installing a rainwater catchment system on campus as part of their Schoolyard Greening program. The installation will be led by local rainwater harvesting specialist, DIG Cooperative, and community members are invited to come watch, learn, and participate.

It’s a great way to learn about how rain barrels collect rainwater, reduce stormwater pollution, and protect our local creeks and the Bay.

All ages are welcome. We would love for you to join us for some or all of the time and spread the word to anyone who might be interested in learning how to install a rain barrel system.

The event runs from 9:00AM - 12:30PM if you would like to attend.

We’re celebrating educators who are helping students connect learning to the world around them!

James Osorio, a K-8 Physical Education teacher at Connect Community Charter School, is doing just that.

This spring, his 8th graders are exploring the question: what makes a city healthy? They’re looking at real health outcomes in their community and digging into root causes like access to sports, safe spaces to walk and bike, healthy food, and sleep.

From there, students are choosing the issues they care most about and creating solutions to share with local experts and community members.

It’s a powerful reminder that learning doesn’t have to stay in the classroom. With the right support, students can think critically, collaborate, and take action on the issues that impact their lives.

We’re grateful for educators like Coach Oso who make this kind of learning possible.

Connect received an award for our efforts to increase environmental awareness in our students, add greenery to our campus, and create native gardens to attract pollinators. We will also be getting a rain barrel this week to help with water conservation. This is an ongoing project that depends on our whole school's involvements as well as the help of parent volunteers and our many community partners: Canopy, Xerces, CalFresh, the Redwood City School District, and more!

If you are interested in participating in some way, please let us know. We are always looking for ways to include more people in this ongoing project.
