Today was the county’s first commemorative Purple Heart Day flag raising ceremony. It was an honor to present the proclamation recognizing our residents who gave so much in the line of duty. Thank you to Supervisor Mueller for cosponsoring this event, to our Veterans Services Officer Ed Kiryczun, to our guest speaker and Purple Heart recipient Albert Banfield, and to all the service members who carried the burden of freedom on their shoulders so the rest of us could walk in safety. We see you, and we will never forget your sacrifices.

It’s National Night Out!

I’m excited to be out across the county this evening visiting as many neighborhood celebrations as possible. National Night Out is a wonderful opportunity to connect with neighbors, support our public safety partners, and celebrate the strong communities that make San Mateo County so special.

Have a wonderful evening, and I hope to see you out there!

🌈 HAPPY PRIDE MONTH 🌈

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 14th Annual San Mateo County PRIDE Celebration in Central Park!

It was inspiring to see our community come together to celebrate love, inclusion, and belonging. I was especially proud to see County staff from across departments at resource tables throughout the event, connecting residents with services and demonstrating our ongoing support for the LGBTQIA+ community.

What I’ll remember most is the incredible sense of joy and connection that filled the park. Seeing families, friends, advocates, and allies celebrating together was a powerful reminder that San Mateo County is at its best when everyone feels seen, valued, and welcome.

Thank you to BHRS, our community partners, volunteers, and everyone who helped make this year’s celebration such a success.

AS AANHPI Heritage Month comes to a close, I’m
reflecting on the opportunity to celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities throughout San Mateo County.

One highlight was welcoming a delegation from the Kingdom of Tonga, led by Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Sinaitakala Tuku’aho, through the
Sister City partnership between the City of East Palo Alto and Kolofo’ou, Tonga. It was an honor to celebrate the enduring cultural ties, shared values, and connections that strengthen our communities.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Clarence B. Jones, a civil rights leader whose voice and courage helped shape our country.

Earlier this year, I had the honor of welcoming him virtually as he accepted San Mateo County’s Black History Month proclamation. Even through a screen, his presence carried weight and reminded us of the responsibility we all share to speak out and stand up for justice.

His words continue to challenge us not to stay silent, but to lead with purpose and conviction.

May we honor his legacy by continuing the work, by lifting our voices, supporting our communities, and striving for a more just and equitable future for all.

Thank you and Rest in Power, Mr. Jones.

Today, we pause as a nation to honor the service members who gave their lives in defense of our country. Memorial Day is a moment of remembrance, reflection, and gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Their courage is the reason we have the freedoms we often take for granted. Today, we remember not just their service, but their lives, their stories, and the families who carry their legacy forward.

May is Mental Health Month and recognized here in San Mateo County as a reminder to stop defaulting to “I’m fine” when we’re not.

Real strength looks like asking for help, resting without guilt, or being honest about where you’re at.

If you need support:

• San Mateo County Behavioral Health & Recovery Services
• StarVista Crisis Center (24/7)
• NAMI San Mateo County
• Call or text 988

Mental health is ours and none of us are meant to carry it alone.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Nancy McGee.

She was a committed leader who dedicated her career to supporting students and strengthening our schools.

My thoughts are with her family and the entire education community.
