Yesterday Tuesday 12/28/2021 Chief West and Explorer Ellersick was patrolling on highway 248 and they spotted an injured hawk. As you may or may not know, Hawks are protected by law here in Missouri. This is because of their role in the balance in the pyramid. Hawks are the top of the pyramid and known as raptors or birds of prey. If the amount of prey in the pyramid decreased then the next level of the pyramid this would be animals like squirrels, snakes, and rabbits and this level would be overpopulated. With the second level of the pyramid being over populated the last level which is the habitat would not be able to support all the animals in the middle pyramid. So Chief West reached out to the Dickerson Park Zoo in hope that they would be able to help rehabilitate it. To his luck they were able to take it and treat it. The hawk was named Rosie . Here are a few pictures of Rosie the Hawk, Explorer Ellersick, and a zoo keeper at the zoo.
