The Reedsport Police Department would like to take an opportunity to clarify and provide some additional details regarding the tragic event which claimed the life of one of our residents on August 12th.

First off, the cause of this tragedy was not speed related in any way, nor was this a case of running a red light. The Reedsport Police Department was fully staffed during this time with four officers on duty and an additional two working federally funded traffic grant overtime focusing solely on traffic enforcement.

Second, this was not a hit and run situation. The involved driver remained on scene and fully cooperated with the investigation. At this time, there is no indication of impairment or criminally negligent driving. At this point in the investigation, this appears to be a terrible accident.

Reedsport is a special place and this time of year we see a massive influx in both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. We encourage all to use patience, defensive driving skills and courtesy when navigating through our streets.

We here at the Reedsport Police Department are deeply saddened by the events of August 12th, and we recognize the effect it’s had on our community. Please know this agency will continue to strive to provide the best services we can to our great community.

On 8/12/26 at approximately 4:04pm, the Reedsport Police Department responded to a reported vehicle vs pedestrian collision at the intersection of US Highway 101 and 19th Street.

Upon arrival, responding officers found multiple citizens rendering aid to a 34 year old Reedsport resident and her two year old son who’d been struck by a motorist.

Despite the best efforts of all involved, tragically the 34-year-old female did not survive her injuries. The involved two-year-old was transported to Lower Umpqua Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries before being reunited with his father.

This incident is still being investigated by the Reedsport Police Department with assistance from the Oregon State Police and Coos Bay Police Department. No further information will be released until the investigation is complete.

The Reedsport Police Department would like to thank all citizens who assisted in this tragic event by way of rendering aid or providing witness statements. Additionally we’d like to thank our partners with the Oregon State Police, Douglas County Sheriffs Office, Coos Bay Police Department, Oregon Department of Transportation, The Reedsport Volunteer Fire Department and Lower Umpqua Ambulance for their assistance during this incident. The Reedsport Police Department offers our sincere condolences to all affected by this tragedy.

We are very thankful to have him as our Chief. He has accomplished so much over the past few months at the Reedsport Police Department.

Joining Reedsport Police Department in congratulating Chief Scoville on his promotion. Chief Scoville brings more than three decades of Oregon law enforcement experience to the position. He began his career with the North Bend Police Department in 1990, where he was promoted to corporal, before joining the Coos Bay Police Department in 1994. Over the course of his career, he has served in a wide variety of assignments, including as a watch commander, detective, narcotics detective, field training officer, defensive tactics instructor, K-9 officer and trainer, motorcycle officer and school resource officer.

In 2011, Chief Scoville joined the Coquille Tribal Police Department, where his work included extensive K-9 and narcotics enforcement experience and service with the South Coast Interagency Narcotics Team. He returned to the Coos Bay Police Department in 2020 and retired in July 2025 after more than 33 years of public safety service. Throughout his career, Chief Scoville has also been recognized for his commitment to training and mentoring fellow officers — a legacy that has extended to his own family, with both of his sons following him into law enforcement and serving with the Coos Bay Police Department.

Chief Scoville joined the Reedsport Police Department as lieutenant in February 2026 and was soon called upon to serve as interim police chief. His permanent appointment reflects a career built on extensive operational experience, leadership, mentorship and service to communities throughout Oregon’s South Coast.

OACP congratulates Chief Scoville on this well-earned appointment and wishes him continued success as he leads the Reedsport Police Department.
