We, at West Allen Parish Water District, would like to provide the following information regarding preparing for the winter. Freeze Protection is a great way to prevent broken pipes and costly repairs. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our office at 337-749-2589.
Preventative Measures (Before a Freeze):
• Insulate Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes in unheated areas (attics, crawl spaces, garages, near exterior walls) with foam sleeves, insulation, or heat tape.
• Seal Air Leaks: Caulk or weatherstrip cracks around windows, doors, and where pipes enter the house to block cold drafts.
• Maintain Heat: Keep your thermostat at a minimum of 55°F, even when away, and maintain a consistent temperature.
• Drip Faucets: Let a slow, steady drip from faucets, especially those on exterior walls, to keep water moving.
• Protect Outdoors: Disconnect garden hoses, shut off and drain outdoor faucets (hose bibs), and cover them with insulated covers or blankets.
• Open Cabinets: Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air circulate around pipes.
If a Pipe Freezes:
• Shut Off Water: Locate your home's main water shut-off valve and turn the water off to prevent flooding if the pipe bursts.
• Identify the Frozen Section: Check for signs like no water flow from a faucet, even when others work.
• Apply Gentle Heat: Use a hairdryer, electric heating pad, or warm, damp towels to slowly warm the frozen area.
• Avoid Open Flames: Never use blowtorches, kerosene heaters, or open flames to thaw pipes.
