Update on Senate Bill 319 a/k/a Constitutional Carry Bill:
The bill is set for final passage and is expected to reach the Governor’s desk for his signature. Even with him signing the bill we will continue to issue WCP (weapons carry permits). The reasons we will continue to issue permits are for the following reasons:
It allows a licensee to purchase weapons without the background check delay because the permit is proof that they are eligible to purchase. Our Probate Court has already vetted their Georgia and national criminal records;
It will also provide lawful carry in states which reciprocate with Georgia; and
If you have a permit it provides some additional benefit and protection. For instance, if TSA finds you with a weapon at the airport, those with a WCP are allowed to leave and put the weapon away. Those without a WCP are not afforded the privilege and are charged with a crime. O.C.G.A. 16-11-130.2. **However, you could be subject to a separate federal charge with potential fine because of the distinction between State and Federal laws if you show up at an airport with a gun.

As-to-date we are continuing to issue permits. I will do my best to keep everyone updated on new developments.

I have two employees out being tested for Covid this week. They are home pending the results. Praying their results are negative. Due to being short staffed it may take longer for us to get back with you than normal. Please be patient and we will take care of your need as expeditiously as we can. Thank you. Gloria Dubberly

As businesses across Georgia have begun reopening, state Supreme Court Justice Harold Melton has extended the statewide judicial emergency, continuing the suspension of civil and criminal trials and barring courts from impaneling new trial or grand juries.

There have been some monumental moments for us here at Probate Court during all this Covid-19 which have been awesome. I think we all cheered when Mr. Dan Dubberly, oldest practicing attorney, successfully FaceTimed our office for a probate hearing. We continue to press on in all of this and have learned a lot in the process. Good memories we would have otherwise missed out on.
