TEACHER TURNOVER. BURNOUT. SHORT-STAFFED SCHOOLS. AFTER TWO YEARS IN A PANDEMIC, FOR MANY PEOPLE, LIFE IS GETTING BACK TO NORMAL. BUT SCHOOLS ARE NOT BACK TO NORMAL.

Host Liz Schlemmer spoke with three local leaders of the North Carolina Association of Educators in Durham, Orange and Rockingham Counties about the problem of and solutions for teacher retention.

Teacher turnover. Burnout. Short-staffed schools. After two years in a pandemic, for many people, life is getting back to normal. But schools are not back to normal.

Food nutrition staff, instructional assistants, EC teaching assistants, and custodial staff all go above and beyond to support our students.

Meanwhile, the cost of housing, gas, and food continue to rise, and it gets harder and harder to fully staff our schools -- which impacts our kids most.

Everyone deserves a living wage.

So proud of the work ALL educators are doing to lift and support and teach our students. EVERYONE — instructional assistants, custodial staff, and food nutrition staff — deserves a living wage.

HAPPY BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION WEEK! There is BIG NEWS out of the Board of Education Meeting tonight: RCS Bus Drivers will now earn $15+/hour PLUS $5/route incentive pay as well as having their CDL expenses reimbursed. (Effective 3/31/22)

THAT TELLS US 1.) they UNDERSTAND that the existing wages were NOT ENOUGH and NOT COMPETITIVE with surrounding counties, and 2.) It's totally legitimate to demand a living wage. When we organize, we win.

Thank you, RCS BOE, for doing the right thing tonight. NOW DO custodial staff, school nutrition staff, AND teaching assistants, who have to work multiple jobs to get by. for you to do the right thing so their classrooms and schools aren't burning out their staff.

Drastic staff shortages mean that teachers are overextended, covering extra classes and managing more students than ever. Meanwhile, educators and staff are leaving the profession or retiring in higher numbers than ever. Our students can't wait for our Board of Ed to prioritize recruiting and retaining staff. "North Carolina schools received close to $6 billion from the federal government since the pandemic began. Eighty percent of this money has not been spent, according to data from the U.S. Department of Education. The funds come with certain restrictions and districts have until 2024 to spend some of the money. However, the billions are sitting unspent as schools and students face ongoing needs."

Learning loss is a top focus of educators across the nation and a big reason why lawmakers allocated $190 billion to districts across the country.

A stunning 55% of educators are considering leaving the profession. We MUST include staff when making budget decisions because they are the experts on what their schools need.

We know what it will take to address this crisis. Elected officials must act now to prevent a mass exodus of teachers and other school staff over the next few years.
