Chinqua-Penn Walking Trail Chinqua-Penn Walking Trail
Free to public The 1.7 miles trail is excellent for recreational walking.

Its beautiful surroundings offer opportunities to watch wildlife, examine historical sites, and observe agricultural research done by the Upper Piedmont Research Station. The trail begins and ends at a parking lot on the corner of Trail Way off Wentworth Street, 1/3 mile west of the entrance to Chinqua-Penn mansion.

Yes, it was hot on National Trails Day, but a lot of people came out to enjoy and support the trail! Lots of stories about what the trail means, from people who've been walking the trail for years and those just discovering it! Our volunteers are awesome: sitting for hours to greet people or repairing trail benches in the shade. Many, many thanks for all your support and contributions!

Did you know that the trail relies entirely on individual and community donations and the occasional grant for its upkeep, and receives no funding from any municipal, governmental, or institutional entities? And volunteers provide the bulk of the maintenance and management of the trail and the historic structures that surround it. One easy way to support the trail is to buy one (or more) of the beautiful 2027 calendars Lynn Carter has put together with her photos of the trail and its inhabitants. You can email Lynn at [email protected] with your order or come out to the National Trails Day event on June 6 from 9am to 3pm and pick one up!

June 6 is National Trails Day, a good reminder that great trails don’t just happen! For more than 25 years, the Chinqua-Penn Walking Trail has been the community’s trail, maintained and managed by local volunteers, funded by donations and the occasional grant. We are grateful to the Upper Piedmont Research Station and North Carolina State University, which allow us to enjoy this beautiful and historic environment on their property!

We invite you to come on out and celebrate our trail on June 6: hike or run the trail, have a picnic at the stew site, commune with the cows, pick up trash, go on a treasure hunt, create some slate art, and pick up some Chinqua-Penn souvenirs.

Even if you can’t join us on June 6, please consider making a donation via our website. Your donation, no matter the amount, will contribute to the long-term sustainability and vitality of the Chinqua-Penn Walking Trail.

Our volunteer crews have been busy! You'll see some of their work; some you won't see but it all benefits your trail experience! Keith, our horticulture guru, plowed the pollinator gardens, and had to wrestle with creeping kudzu before he could finally plant the wildflower and sunflower seeds. Lee and his team of Liz, Curtis, Freddy, and Roger mow not only the big grassy area near the parking lot, but also both sides of the trail, all the way up past the bull pasture on one side and across the dam at Turkey Pond on the other. Danny and his faithful dog, on their daily walk, spray-painted the rocks and roots along the trail in bright orange, so we don't trip on them. Lee and Steve gave the "gator" a full tune-up; here's hoping it has a few more good years left in it.

The cows are now empty-nesters and today they have been complaining. Mind you, they munch on grass and then bellow, then go back to munching on grass. These cows have had a calf every year since they came of age, but it will be a day or two before they remember that now they have more food and space in the pasture and less worry now that the young'uns have moved on to the next chapter in their lives.

Fifty-five second graders walked a trail together. What happened when they got back to the trailhead is still on my mind.
