🚨 Rockingham County Upgraded to Extreme Drought (D3) Status 🚨
Today's update from the U.S. Drought Monitor has upgraded Rockingham County to Extreme Drought (D3) status. This designation is significant because it indicates ongoing dry conditions, increased stress on crops and vegetation, declining water supplies, and a much higher risk of dangerous wildfires.
Why were we upgraded to D3?
• Ongoing lack of measurable rainfall
• Extremely dry soil and vegetation
• Lower stream and water levels
• Continued warm, windy conditions that accelerate drying
These factors combine to create conditions where fires can start easily and spread rapidly.
🔥 Burn Ban Reminder
A burn ban remains in place across Rockingham County and the State of North Carolina. Burning is NOT allowed anywhere in the county until conditions improve.
Help Prevent Wildfires During These Dry Conditions:
• Do not burn outdoors
• Properly dispose of ci******es and smoking materials
• Avoid parking vehicles on dry grass
• Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks
• Report smoke or fire immediately to 911
We encourage everyone to stay vigilant, conserve water when possible, and do their part to keep our community safe during this period of extreme drought.
