Teachers and administrators from across Lowndes County Schools came together for Data Days, a two-day event focused on analyzing student achievement data, sharing best practices, and collaborating with colleagues from across the district.

Through meaningful conversations and intentional planning, teams celebrated successes, identified opportunities for growth, and developed strategies to support students in the year ahead.

Together, we are building momentum for another successful year of learning!

Dewar Elementary School is proud to welcome Ashley Berry as their new Assistant Principal!

Ashley Berry is a dedicated and student-centered educational leader with over 15 years of experience supporting students, educators, and school systems through specialized behavior intervention, special education leadership, instructional support, and capacity building. She joins Dewar Elementary School in the Lowndes County School District after serving in a variety of leadership and support roles within Valdosta City Schools, where she developed extensive expertise in behavior intervention, trauma-informed practices, instructional coaching, and equitable student support systems.

Throughout her career, she has led professional learning and staff development initiatives focused on behavior management, crisis de-escalation, trauma-informed practices, and positive behavior supports. She has mentored Behavior Intervention Specialists, facilitated district-wide professional development, and supported teachers in strengthening instructional practices that increase student engagement and improve learning outcomes. Her leadership is grounded in relationship building, collaborative problem solving, and creating safe, supportive learning environments where all students can thrive.

Prior to her district-level leadership roles, she served as Lead Special Education Teacher at Valdosta Middle School, where she supported instructional programming, IEP implementation, compliance processes, and professional learning for special education staff. This classroom and leadership experience provided a strong foundation in differentiated instruction, instructional leadership, data-informed decision making, and systems-level student support.

Her background also includes extensive expertise in MTSS implementation, behavior analysis, crisis intervention, and consultative coaching. She is certified as a Mindset De-escalation and Restraint Instructor and has completed advanced training in behavior analysis, trauma competency, and behavior intervention systems. Her leadership consistently emphasizes empathy, consistency, high expectations, and collaborative partnerships among schools, families, and communities.

We are incredibly proud to announce that our very own Mrs. Quita Jones, School Counselor at Lowndes Middle School, has been named the 2026 Conference Ambassador Leader for the upcoming ASCA Conference in New Orleans this July!
Mrs. Jones continuously goes above and beyond to inspire our students, build meaningful relationships, and guide them toward bright futures. We are so thrilled to see her leadership recognized on a national stage!

As we prepare for the 2026–2027 school year, Lowndes County Schools would like to make families aware of an important update to the 2026–2027 Student & Parent Handbook.

Electronic smoking devices containing THC or other controlled substances are addressed under Rule 7, Drugs, Except Alcohol and To***co. All other electronic smoking devices used to deliver ni****ne or other substances intended for human consumption through v***r or aerosol inhalation are addressed under Rule 42, Electronic Smoking Device.

All electronic smoking devices remain prohibited on any Lowndes County School property. The handbook has been updated for the 2026–2027 school year to clarify that violations of Rule 7 involving the possession, use, sale, or distribution of devices containing THC or other controlled substances, as well as three or more violations of Rule 42 Electronic Smoking Device within a single school year, may result in more serious disciplinary consequences, including referral to law enforcement and possible criminal charges.
We encourage families to review the updated handbook carefully with their students to ensure they understand the expectations and possible consequences.

Lowndes County Schools Teacher of the Year Ashleigh Kenny recently traveled to Atlanta to participate in the Georgia Teacher of the Year Conference and Gala.

Kenny, an Instructional Lead Teacher and English Language Arts teacher at Pine Grove Middle School, was recognized as one of Georgia's Top 10 Teachers of the Year during the annual celebration of excellence in public education held at the Georgia Aquarium.

Superintendent Sandra Wilcher stated, “Ashleigh Kenny embodies the very best of public education." “This recognition as a finalist affirms what we witness every day in Lowndes County Schools: great educators change lives. Public education is powerful because of educators like Ms. Kenny who invest in students, believe in their potential, and help prepare them for the future.”

“Her impact reaches far beyond the walls of her classroom and extends across generations of students and families. We could not be more proud to see her recognized on the state level, and we are thrilled that all of Georgia now has the opportunity to celebrate what we have known for years; Ms. Kenny is an exceptional educator whose influence will be felt for years to come.”

Kenny has spent 13 years in education and currently serves as both an Instructional Lead Teacher and ELA teacher at Pine Grove Middle School. In addition to teaching students daily, she supports curriculum development, coaches fellow teachers, and helps lead instructional improvement efforts across her school.

Known for her engaging approach to literacy instruction and strong student connections, Kenny is passionate about helping students find their voice through writing while creating authentic learning experiences tied to the community around them.

Earlier this spring, Kenny learned she had been selected as a Top 10 finalist for Georgia Teacher of the Year during a surprise visit from State School Superintendent Richard Woods and district leaders while attending a field trip at Wild Adventures Theme Park with students. Since then, she has participated in multiple rounds of interviews and judging in Atlanta, culminating with her recognition at the Georgia Teacher of the Year Gala.

Kenny is the eighth educator from Lowndes County Schools to earn a place among Georgia's Top 10 Teacher of the Year finalists and joins a distinguished group of teachers who have represented the district at the state level. Congratulations, Ashleigh Kenny!
