⚖️ Virginia E-Bike Laws: What’s Legal vs. What Isn’t?

🚲 There’s been a lot of confusion about e-bikes, dirt bikes, and what’s actually allowed on the road in Virginia—so here’s a clear, fact-based breakdown to keep everyone informed and safe.

✅ Legal E-Bikes in Virginia
Virginia follows a 3-class system:
• Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph
• Class 2: Throttle-powered, up to 20 mph
• Class 3: Pedal-assist, up to 28 mph
To qualify as a legal e-bike, it must:
✔️ Have fully operable pedals
✔️ Have a motor of 750 watts or less
✔️ Stay within its class speed limits

Good news: Legal e-bikes are treated like bicycles in Virginia—

👉 No license, registration, or insurance required
You can generally ride them on roads, bike lanes, and many shared-use paths (local rules may vary).

🚫 When an “E-Bike” Is NOT Legally an E-Bike
If a bike:
• Exceeds speed limits for its class
• Has a motor over 750 watts
• Doesn’t have operable pedals
• Has been modified beyond legal specs
…it may no longer qualify as an e-bike under Virginia law.

👉 Instead, it could be classified as a moped or motorcycle, which means:

• Registration may be required
• A license may be required
• It may not be allowed on sidewalks or bike paths

🏍️ Dirt Bikes & Off-Road Vehicles
Dirt bikes (gas or electric) are designed for off-road use and are not street legal unless they are properly titled, registered, and equipped for road use.

Riding them on public streets, sidewalks, or parks in Virginia can result in:
⚠️ Fines
⚠️ Vehicle impoundment
⚠️ Legal penalties
⚠️ Why This Matters
These laws are about safety. Higher speeds and heavier vehicles don’t belong in spaces meant for pedestrians and cyclists.

Today marks America’s 250th birthday. It’s a good day to spend time with family and friends, enjoy the traditions that bring our community together, and remember the people who have served and sacrificed so we can enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted.

At approximately 6:00 PM yesterday evening, a report of a missing elderly person suffering from dementia was dispatched in the area of Sumerduck Road and Hardin Pines Road. Due to the close proximity to the Town of Re*****on, a Re*****on Police Officer responded to assist and was able to locate the missing individual safely within minutes.

This incident highlights the strong working relationship and teamwork between the Re*****on Police Department and the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office. We are grateful for the cooperation between agencies and thankful for a safe outcome for the individual and their family.

The Re*****on Police Department extends its deepest condolences and unwavering support to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office following the tragic line-of-duty death of one of their deputies last night.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the fallen deputy’s family, friends, and fellow deputies during this heartbreaking time. We also pray for the full recovery of the wounded deputy and for the safety of all law enforcement personnel actively involved in the ongoing search for the suspect.

Every day, law enforcement officers across the Commonwealth answer calls for service not knowing the dangers they may face. This tragedy is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those who wear the badge in service to their communities.

The Re*****on Police Department stands in solidarity with Sheriff Kevin Kemp and the entire Carroll County Sheriff’s Office as they navigate this difficult time.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

At approximately 9:26 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a request from a family member to conduct a welfare check at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the residence. Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with a male subject identified as Michael Puckett. During the encounter, Puckett opened fire on the responding deputies. Deputies returned fire.

Both deputies were struck by gunfire. One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition.

Michael Puckett fled the scene and remains at large. A coordinated law enforcement search is currently underway.

Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately call 911.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Last week, the Re*****on Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department hosted their Spring Bash Festival, and we were glad to be part of it!

The Re*****on Police Department set up a Drug Take Back location during the event and, thanks to the community’s support, we collected 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟔𝟎 𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐧𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.

These medications won’t end up in the wrong hands—and that matters. Unused prescription drugs are a major public safety concern, contributing to accidental poisonings, overdoses, and abuse. Many times, these drugs are taken from home medicine cabinets by family members or friends.

Proper disposal helps:
• Prevent misuse and addiction
• Reduce the risk of overdose
• Protect our water supply from contamination

Take-back programs like this are the safest way to dispose of medications, and we appreciate everyone who took the time to stop by and do their part.
