** THURSDAY PENNSYLVANIA SEVERE WEATHER THREAT **

There will be another threat for strong to severe thunderstorms across the state this afternoon and evening. A few storms can be on the stronger side this morning, but they have been showing signs of weakening. This threat primarily focuses on the afternoon and evening hours. The afternoon risk will be greatest between 5 PM - 12 AM.

ZONE 2 - Scattered severe storms can be expected (30-50%). Expect the potential for bowing wind segments to produce wind gusts of 50 - 60 + mph. Ahead of any bowing segment, isolated supercells may develop that will be capable of producing large hail and an isolated tornado.

ZONE 1 - Isolated strong storms can be expected (10-30%). The best dynamics and instability will be in Zone 2. Storms that move from Zone 2 will need to be monitored, but be on the lookout for increased wind segments with passing storms, capable of producing wind gusts 50 - 60 MPH later this afternoon and evening. The tornado threat is near 0%, but a brief spin-up cannot be ruled out.

-> Keep in mind, severe weather does not impact every house or neighborhood. Unless it is a large outbreak, severe weather impacts will differ even across small areas. It is always good to be prepared by having multiple ways of receiving severe weather alerts and a shelter to take cover in when severe weather strikes.

While this current storm is almost out of the area, the forecast is calling for additional storms this afternoon/evening.

A line of strong to severe thunderstorms is tracking across portions of western Pennsylvania to the north of Pittsburgh, and will continue across the region through 8 AM. Expect torrential rain, wind gusts of 50 to 60 MPH, and frequent lightning. Stay in shelter as these storms approach!

** WEDNESDAY SEVERE POTENTIAL **

The second day of our potential severe weather days (Tuesday - Thursday) will be Wednesday, September 2nd. Another day will be fueled by higher temperatures and humidity levels, as a stronger disturbance will track into the region. The wind shear levels will be increasing as well, which will support the potential for damaging wind segments.

SIGNIFICANT SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE... As of right now, I will be looking for the potential for damaging wind segments (70+ mph), large hail, and perhaps a few tornadoes. Since we are still 40 - 48 hours out, changes can be expected, but right now anyone in the state is at fair game to see the potential severe weather. Graphics for Thursday will be released over the next few days, although the regions will be fairly similar (albeit a tad shifted south). Wednesday right now appears to be the busiest severe weather day out of this stretch.

⚠️If you are in an area that is prone to losing power during severe weather, I advise you to prepare over the next 48 hours before this risk materializes. Of course, we are still 48 hours + out, so changes are to be expected, and not every location will see severe weather, but it will be good to be prepared! I will be posting more updates and videos on this threat.

** PARTIAL LUNAR ECLIPSE **

The entire state of Pennsylvania will see a Partial Lunar Eclipse tomorrow (Thursday) night into early (Friday) morning. This will be only a partial eclipse, as the Earth's shadow will only cover about 93% of the Moon. Nevertheless, it is another neat sky spectacle. Unfortunately, given we do live in Pennsylvania, cloud cover will be a problem. Widespread showers and thunderstorms during the evening will allow for thick cloud cover, especially across central and eastern Pennsylvania. For those in western Pennsylvania, where the storms will be much lower, there may be breaks of cloud cover throughout the night, allowing you to view the lunar eclipse!

What is a lunar eclipse? A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is positioned exactly between the Moon and the Sun. The Earth casts a shadow on the surface of the Moon, dimming it. According to NASA, during a lunar eclipse, some sunlight passes through the Earth's atmosphere and then hits the moon's surface. Due to the positioning of the sun, the short wavelengths are scattered away from the atmosphere while the longer wavelengths make it through the atmosphere and moon, casting a red/orange hue. The more dust, smoke, or clouds in the atmosphere, the redder the moon will be.
