Protecting giant sequoias starts before wildfire strikes.

Associate Professor Sarah Bisbing and Research Associate Bryant Nagelson studied about 5,000 giant sequoias in the Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest, home to the world's largest giant sequoia grove.

Our research found that prescribed burns, tree thinning and other fuel reduction treatments helped giant sequoias survive the devastating 2020 Castle Fire in California. Trees in areas treated before the fire had half the mortality rate of those in untreated areas. The findings show how proactive forest management, including prescribed fire and Indigenous stewardship, can help protect these long-lived trees from increasingly severe wildfires.

"Giant sequoias are incredible trees. They store huge amounts of carbon, provide a huge amount of habitat for wildlife species and help stabilize slopes," Bisbing said.

From forests and wildlife to seeds, streams and soil, there’s always more to discover.

During NevadaFIT, new students in our Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Science took part in hands-on activities, from logging sports and a native seed bank tour to visiting our Experiment Station’s Desert Farming Initiative. Students also visited our Museum of Natural History to learn more about Nevada’s plants, animals and natural history.

At our University's Lake Tahoe campus, students headed into the field to measure trees, sample insects and test water quality. They also learned about native fish through fish tagging, identification and tracking. While at the campus, the group was surprised by University President Brian Sandoval, who stopped by to meet the students and welcome them to the Wolf Pack.

From forests and streams to labs and museums, NevadaFIT gave these future natural resource and environmental science professionals a look at the many ways they can turn their interests into a career.

From DNA to discovery, students got a look at the science behind life.

During NevadaFIT, new students explored our Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Biotechnology. They went to classes, took part in lab activities and learned about research happening in our College.

Students learned about DNA, proteins and fats and how they help make up living things. They also learned how scientists use this information to study important questions about health and life.

In one lab activity, students tested a small piece of DNA to see if it had the “Wolf Pack” gene. They used lab tools and techniques to study the DNA and see their results.

Students also learned about research happening across our College and visited labs where students and faculty are working on new projects.

From the fundamentals of biochemistry to hands-on molecular biology techniques, NevadaFIT gave these future scientists and medical professionals a glimpse into the many ways they can turn their curiosity into discovery.

Feeding curiosity, one nutrition lesson at a time.

During NevadaFIT, new students in our Department of Nutrition got a closer look at what they can learn and do in the program. They went to classes and joined activities about food, sports nutrition, health and food service. They also learned about our majors and the jobs they can pursue after college.

Students also visited the Experiment Station’s Desert Farming Initiative. There, they picked up some fresh tomatoes and garlic and used them to make pico de gallo during a hands-on activity.

Students then visited two nutrition labs to see what research looks like. They learned about the tiny organisms that live in our bodies and how nutrition can affect our health. They also met nutrition faculty and department leaders who will help guide them during their time at the University.

From nutrition research to hands-on food activities, NevadaFIT gave these future nutrition professionals a look at the many ways they can turn their interests into a career.

Plants, livestock, rangelands and research — just another week in our Department of Agriculture, Veterinary & Rangeland Sciences.

During NevadaFIT, our new students explored the many opportunities waiting for them in our College. They were introduced to courses and programs, including the Agricultural Communications minor, attended lectures, and visited labs and facilities to learn about reproduction, plant pathology, rangelands, irrigation and farming.

They also got a taste of research at our Experiment Station's Desert Farming Initiative, where they participated in tomato tasting and learned about ongoing agricultural research. Students connected with some of our College clubs, including Pre-Veterinary, Range and Equestrian Team, before heading to our Experiment Station's Main Station Farm for hands-on activities focused on equine dental health, sheep vital signs and parasitology.

From the classroom to the farm, NevadaFIT gave these future agriculture, veterinary and rangeland professionals a look at the many ways they can turn their interests into a career.
