TMCC Veterans Upward Bound Program

TMCC Veterans Upward Bound Program Proudly serving Northern Nevada's heroes since 1989! Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is a free educational program for qualified veterans.

A safe space for veterans to figure out their next steps whether it be higher education, trade schools, or the workforce. Funded by the US Department of Education, VUB is designed to assist veterans for success in college and other post-secondary training.

Celebrating our veterans is one of my favorite parts of this work. This week we get to lift up VUB alumnus Michael Sitton from Nevada Department of Veterans Services, who just earned his Master’s Degree from UNR. His journey began right here with Veterans Upward Bound, and his success is a powerful reminder of what can happen when veterans have a community that believes in them from day one.

Michael’s story is exactly why we’re hosting our upcoming VUB Open House Events. These events are designed for veterans who are ready to explore their next chapter, whether that’s college, a certificate program, or simply figuring out where to begin. Just like Michael did.

At our open houses, you can:
• Learn how VUB helps you maximize your education benefits
• Take the Accuplacer for free
• Meet our instructors and support team
• Get connected to tutoring, resources, and a community that truly sees you
• Enjoy light refreshments and a welcoming space to ask questions and explore options

📅 Open House Dates:

Sat. June 13 — 10 AM–Noon

Mon. June 15 — 11 AM–2 PM & 4–6 PM

Wed. June 17 — 11 AM–2 PM & 4–6 PM

📍 Location: 5270 Neil Road, MDWS 303

Michael is also sharing his experience in a VUB testimonial video because he wants other Nevada veterans to know what he discovered: you don’t have to navigate this alone.

If you’re a veteran wondering what’s next, come see us.

Today, Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) had the privilege of participating in Truckee Meadows Community College's Disability Resource Fair and what a powerful reminder it was of why this work matters!

At VUB, we meet veterans exactly where they are. Many of the veterans we serve live with visible or invisible disabilities, and every single one of them brings strength, resilience, and a story worth honoring. Our job isn’t to “fix” anyone. It’s to open doors, build confidence, and help veterans find their next step with dignity and support.

Whether a veteran is navigating service‑connected disabilities, learning differences, mental health challenges, or simply trying to rebuild after transition, they belong here. They deserve access to education, resources, and a community that sees their potential.

Events like today’s fair remind us that disability is not a barrier to success. It’s part of the lived experience of so many in our veteran community, and VUB is proud to stand alongside them with compassion, advocacy, and practical tools for the journey ahead.

If you or a veteran you know could benefit from academic support, career exploration, or simply a team that believes in you, VUB is here.

You belong here, and together we rise.

What an incredible day for our VUB participants at the University of Nevada Alumni Association - Veterans Alumni Chapter ENGAGE event on April 17th! We had the privilege of hearing Medal of Honor recipient Clint Romesha share his story. A message filled with courage, humility, and leadership that resonated deeply with everyone in the room.

Events like this remind us why community matters. When veterans come together to learn, connect, and support one another, something powerful happens. You can feel the strength and shared purpose.

We’re so proud of our VUB participants who showed up ready to engage, and we’re grateful to our partners for creating opportunities that uplift and empower Nevada’s veterans.

This was one of April’s standout moments and we’re excited for everything ahead.

What an inspiring day Thursday was for our VUB team! We had the chance to tour the brand‑new Liberty Dogs campus, and we are so grateful for this partnership and shared mission.

Liberty Dogs is creating a space where veterans and dogs can learn, and grow together at no cost to the veteran. Their work aligns beautifully with what we strive for at Veterans Upward Bound hosted by Truckee Meadows Community College: helping veterans move forward with confidence, purpose, and a strong community behind them.

Right now, Liberty Dogs is looking for 15 veterans. Veterans will be paired with shelter dogs, and both will receive free training.
This helps get trained service dogs to veterans faster and strengthens the bond from day one.

Requirement: At least a 10% service connection for PTSD.

If this sounds like something that could support your next chapter or if you know a veteran who might benefit, please reach out to us. This is an incredible opportunity to be part of something meaningful.

Thank you, Liberty Dogs, for welcoming us and for the incredible work you’re doing for Nevada’s veterans.

Together, we rise.

Veterans Upward Bound had the privilege of meeting with Kameron (Michael) Hawkins at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home after a referral from Nevada Department of Veterans Services VSO Logan Service. Thanks to the generosity of the Katie Grace Foundation, we were able to provide Kameron with a laptop to support his educational journey and we also helped him complete his application to UNR.

Moments like this reflect the heart of VUB’s mission: meeting veterans where they are, removing barriers, and making sure first‑generation and low‑income veterans have the tools they need to pursue their goals. We’re grateful for our community partners who make this work possible and proud of Kameron for taking this next step.

Nevada veterans! We’d love to see you at an important statewide event happening right here at TMCC.

The 2026 Nevada Veterans Legislative Symposia are coming up, and one of the sessions will be hosted at TMCC in the Student Center from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM this Saturday, March 28th.

These symposia, hosted by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services in partnership with the United Veterans Legislative Council, bring veterans together to talk about the issues that matter most such as education, healthcare, benefits, employment, and the everyday realities of life after service. The priorities identified in these sessions are shared directly with Nevada lawmakers and our Congressional delegation.

Your voice, your experience, and your perspective truly matter in these conversations.

If you’d like to take part, you can register using the link or QR code on the flyer. We hope to see a strong showing from our Northern Nevada veteran community.

Let’s show up, speak up, and help shape the future for Nevada’s veterans!
