The Southern Paiute people lived in the Moapa Valley for thousands of years farming in its fertile oasis. It was turned into a Mormon settlement in the late 1800s, later bought by Howard Hughes and then finally bought and managed today by the Southern Nevada Water Authority for conservation and recreation.

The area is home to 200 bird species and 28 sensitive species including the endemic Moapa Dace. The Moapa Dace is an endangered fish that the NCC works to help conserve. The work in the warm streams here is cyclic and must occur every year to make sure the corridor is clear for monitoring. NCC teams cut a vegetation corridor so that researchers can access the fish habitat and so that streams continue to flow and do not stagnate.
