****PRESS RELEASE****

On May 23, 2026 at approximately 4:41pm the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a motor vehicle accident in the area of SR 14 and CR 1100 W. in Rensselaer, IN. The 9-1-1 caller stated that they had located a passenger car and a motorcycle in the area, both had damage. One vehicle was a black 2015 Hyundai Elantra and the other was a blue 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle. The caller did not immediately locate anyone in the area. However, a few moments later, they called back and stated that they located an unresponsive male subject, with significant injuries, on the southeast corner of the intersection within the wooded area.

Upon deputies’ arrival to the scene at approximately 4:49pm, they were able to identify Randy Sizemore (63) of Rensselaer, IN. as the driver of the motorcycle and as the subject found in the woods. Randy was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Hyundai was located trying to flee the accident on foot with another individual approximately one half of a mile south of the accident scene. The driver was identified as Esly Isai Fuentes Sanabria (21) of Rensselaer, IN. Esly was taken into custody and admitted to being the driver of the Hyundai at the time of the accident.

Preliminary investigation into the accident revealed the Sizemore was eastbound on his motorcycle on SR 14. Fuentes Sanabria was southbound on CR 1100 W. in the Hyundai when he disregarded a clearly visible stop sign and collided with Sizemore. Investigators on scene stated that no view obstructions were present that would have prevented Fuentes Sanabria from seeing both, the stop sign or oncoming traffic.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, with assistance from the Indiana State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, will continue to investigate the accident. Along with these two agencies, the Rensselaer Volunteer Fire Department and Jasper EMS responded to the scene as well as the Jasper County Coroner’s Office.

Fuentes Sanabria was immediately arrested at the scene and is currently being held without bond while charges are pending.

In the early morning hours of May 24, 2026 Fuentes Sanabria was interviewed by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Division who then placed a detainer on Fuentes Sanabria.

This incident is still under investigation. Further information will be made available at a future date and time.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in the court of law.

Our thoughts and prayers are going out to Deputy Jon Samuelson from the LaPorte County Sheriff's Department.

Deputy Samuelson stopped to assist a stranded motorist near Michigan City, Indiana. The motorist requested Deputy Samuelson transport him the the Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City. After Samuelson dropped him off, he was alerted to the fact hat the suspect was implicated in a criminal event that had taken place just a short time before Samuelson happened into him.

Once this discovery was made, Samuelson went into the hospital to try and locate the suspect. Samuelson was immediately fired upon by the suspect and was struck several times.

Samuelson was flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

The 22-year-old suspect from Chicago, ILL. was apprehended shortly afterwards in a wooded area near the hospital.

Our hearts and prayers are going out to Deputy Samuelson, his family and the LaPorte County Sheriff's Department.

*** COMMUNITY ALERT ***

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office is advising residents to use caution when dealing with door-to-door paving and seal coating companies following a recent complaint received in the DeMotte area.

According to the complaint, a company identified as “JC Paving,” reportedly operating with a gray pickup truck, charged a homeowner approximately $1,400 for a driveway seal coating project. A reputable paving contractor later advised that a quality seal coating job of similar size would typically cost around $700. The complaint further alleges the homeowner was pressured into the agreement through high-pressure door-to-door sales tactics and that work may have been performed without proper permission.

Residents are encouraged to exercise caution before agreeing to driveway paving or seal coating services from companies traveling through the area or soliciting door-to-door. Citizens should obtain multiple quotes, verify company credentials, and consult trusted local contractors before authorizing any work.

The Sheriff’s Office recommends contacting established local paving and seal coating businesses for estimates and professional advice regarding driveway maintenance projects.

Anyone who believes they may have been the victim of a scam or deceptive business practice is encouraged to contact the Jasper County Sheriff's Office at 219-866-7344.
