Renton High School students in Gazalle Willecke’s Creative Writing class recently had the opportunity to share their self-authored children’s books with students at Lakeridge Elementary School. As part of a children’s literature unit, the high school students developed every aspect of their books—from creating the plot and characters to illustrating the pages.

During their visit, the Renton High students read their stories aloud, discussed the writing and publishing process, and shared the messages behind their books. The elementary students were eager participants, asking questions and sharing ideas about the stories they would include if they wrote books of their own.

Our graduating seniors today returned to their former elementary schools to encourage students, be reacquainted with former teachers, and challenge younger students to playground sports.

The graduation walks are a great way for our younger students to see what they, too, can accomplish.

Cascade Elementary School students recently got their hands dirty with some gardening exploration thanks to a collaboration with Environmental Science Center. Students started their learning in the classroom then moved to the garden at nearby Family First Community Center to learn about worms, soil, and gardening. Students planted a variety of vegetables and flowers and will continue to watch them grow.

Hazen High School student-athletes recently participated in track and field unified events as part of the state track championships. Unified events provide students with disabilities opportunities to compete with the support of a partner in relays and individual events.

Hazen High’s 26-member unified relay team were coached by coach Sarah Hauer and led in competitions by Hazen senior Zoe Wong, a standout track athlete in the 300m.

The unified team competed in shot put, 100-meter, 4 x 100, and the sprint medley relay. Zoe was so committed to helping her fellow students be able to participate that she forfeited her own individual opportunity to compete in post-season to instead compete with her unified team.

Students from McKnight and Risdon middle schools, and Hazen High School, recently competed in the FIRST Tech Robotics Challenge Premier Event in Lexington, Kentucky, a three-day invitational bringing together 72 elite FTC teams from across the United States and around the world to compete in a high-caliber robotics competition.

Our Renton School District team delivered an outstanding performance, finishing fourth in the playoffs and earning the third place Inspire Award, FTC’s highest honor recognizing excellence in engineering, innovation, outreach, and teamwork.

The event allowed our students to connect with teams from 27 states and around the world, including Kazakhstan and Brazil. The experience allowed them to share ideas, learn new engineering approaches, and build relationships with fellow students who share a passion for STEM.

Congratulations to students Emma Chang, Milla Fishler, Hunter Kemery, Neha Ram, Noah Yoon, for their hard work, dedication, and exceptional representation of our schools and community.
