This month, eight members of KCSARC's Empowered Voices program had the unique opportunity to meet with state and local policymakers. At a Survivor Roundtable held at KCSARC's Renton office, these members courageously shared their experiences, insights and ideas for improving pathways to recovery and justice.

Our thanks to our Empowered Voices members and to officials who took the time to attend: State Sen. Tina Orwall, Representatives Brian Burnett and Representative Lauren Davis, King County Executive Girmay Zahilay, SeaTac Councilmember Caitlin Konya, and staff from the offices of State Representative My-Linh Thai, King County Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda, Seattle Councilmember Bob Kettle, and City of Kenmore Human Services.

Empowered Voices member Gracie was a senior in college when her life changed forever. What followed were years of fear and pain, exacerbated by a justice system that utterly failed her.

In this piece, Gracie shares her journey back to herself — reclaiming her life, rediscovering joy, and offering a reminder to every survivor: we’re still here, and life is worth living.
