Republic-Michigamme School District Board of Education Announces Karey Cross as New Superintendent/Principal
Republic, MI - The Republic-Michigamme School District Board of Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Karey Cross as the district's next Superintendent/Principal, effective July 1, 2026. Ms. Cross succeeds Kevin Luokkala, who is retiring after 11 years of dedicated service in the role.
Ms. Cross brings over two decades of experience in education, including seventeen years as a classroom teacher and more than a decade in K-12 administration. Most recently, she served as Principal of Dove Science Academy Elementary in Oklahoma City, where she oversaw the daily operations of two elementary campuses with a combined student population of 630 and a staff of nearly 70 employees.
In her administrative roles at Dove Schools, Inc., Ms. Cross led professional development initiatives, provided instructional coaching, wrote curriculum, hired staff, mentored emerging educators, oversaw building operations and budgets, and spearheaded efforts that improved student achievement.
Ms. Cross holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Michigan, a Master of Arts in Educational Counseling from the University of Phoenix, and a Master of Arts as a Reading Specialist from Nova Southeastern University.
Ms. Cross is eager to bring her experience and passion for education to the Republic-Michigamme School District community, and is looking forward to returning to Michigan to be closer to family in Marquette County.
"Ms. Cross brings a vast range of experience in educational leadership, curriculum development, and school operations," said Board President Mark Antilla. "After a thorough search process, the Board believes she is an excellent fit for our district, and we are confident she will continue to build on the strong foundation that has been established here."
The Board of Education wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Kevin Luokkala for his 11 years of leadership and commitment to the students, staff, and community of Republic-Michigamme. His contributions to the district have been immeasurable, and he leaves a lasting legacy.
