Counting Season has begun in earnest this spring with our bluebird box monitoring. We have over 30 boxes around Reston, improving habitat quality by providing nesting space for native, cavity-nesting birds like Eastern Bluebirds. Volunteers check their boxes weekly, taking notes whether the space has a nest, what species is using the box, if a nest has eggs or nestlings, and at what stage of growth nestlings are.

While fishing is permitted in Reston's four lakes and two ponds, RA absolutely discourages the placement of traps in our waterbodies.

An abandoned minnow trap recently found in Snakeden Branch had become a "ghost pot" - infinitely trapping wildlife with no chance of their escape. Multiple air-breathing animals lives ended in the trap before it could be recovered.

You can help by reporting suspicious gear or litter in Reston Association Common Areas, including our lakes and streams. The previously mentioned trap was found while staff was responding to a report of scooters abandoned in the stream.

Happy Earth Day! Today we celebrate the beauty of our planet by taking action and brainstorming ways to keep Earth green and healthy. Yesterday with the help of volunteers, we planted 79 native plants in our gardens! Together our small actions can create real change. What are your Earth Day plans?
