As students head back to campus this month, it’s worth talking about a risk that can easily go unnoticed: the college years overlap with a particularly vulnerable period for the emergence of eating disorders.

New routines, increased independence, academic pressure, and distance from familiar support systems can make existing symptoms harder to manage and easier for the people around a student to miss.

And many students who are struggling are never identified. In one large study, only 10.5% of college students experiencing eating disorder symptoms had received an eating disorder diagnosis.

In our latest blog, we cover:

πŸ‘‰ Why the transition to college can be a vulnerable time

πŸ‘‰ Warning signs that can be mistaken for β€œnormal” college habits

πŸ‘‰ How families, roommates, professors, and other trusted people can recognize when something may be wrong

πŸ‘‰ Why students do not need to wait until symptoms become severe to seek support

As students head back to campus, conversations about mental health should include eating disorders, too. πŸŽ“

College can bring major changes all at once: new routines, increased independence, academic pressure, shifting social environments, and changes in access to familiar support systems. For students who are already struggling with food, body image, or disordered eating, those transitions can make symptoms harder to manage or easier to overlook.

And eating disorders do not have one "look." They can affect students of every gender, identity, background, and body size, yet many students experiencing symptoms never receive a diagnosis.

Knowing the signs and taking concerns seriously early can make treatment more effective. Changes in eating patterns, increasingly rigid food rules, excessive exercise, social withdrawal, or growing preoccupation with food or body image are worth paying attention to.

If you or a college student in your life is struggling, support is available close to home. Prosperity provides compassionate, individualized eating disorder treatment across Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia. πŸ’œ

Did you know Prosperity has a Hampton Roads location?

Take a peek inside our Norfolk office with founder Heather Baker, LCSW-S, CEDS-S, as she walks through our space and what treatment here actually looks like!

Hampton Roads is home to one of the largest military communities in the world, along with a large student population across our local universities. For years, specialized eating disorder care here meant traveling hours away, until Prosperity opened its doors right here in Norfolk.

At Prosperity, we offer:
🫢 In-person IOP & PHP programming
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Care for all ages

August can bring a lot of change. Summer routines start shifting, schedules get busier, and messages about getting "back on track" seem to show up everywhere.

For someone navigating eating disorder recovery, changes in routine can also bring changes in eating patterns, movement, body image thoughts, and expectations around what recovery is "supposed" to look like.

This month, remember that recovery does not require perfection. Your body is allowed to change without needing to be "fixed." Your needs still matter on quieter days. Enjoying food does not require compensation. And as summer winds down, your body does not need an end-of-season evaluation.

A shift in routine does not mean losing the progress you have made. Give yourself permission to meet yourself where you are and keep choosing the things that support your recovery!

Save these August Recovery Reminders for the days you need a little extra encouragement, or share them with someone who might need them too. πŸ’œ

Looking for ARFID treatment in Virginia? Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder is often missed. Not because it's rare, but because it doesn't fit the profile most people associate with eating disorders. It isn't about body image. It's rooted in sensory sensitivities, fear-based avoidance, or low appetite, and it can affect clients of any age.

Untreated, ARFID carries real medical risk: cardiovascular strain, GI complications, delayed growth, and nutritional deficiencies. Accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment are critical. It's hard to find without the right team.

At Prosperity Eating Disorders & Wellness Center, our PHP and IOP programs in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia provide ARFID-specific care: CBT tailored to food-related fears, supported exposure therapy, nutritional rehabilitation, and family-based support, coordinated by an interprofessional clinical team.
