Love this. We are experiencing a crisis in affordable housing. No time to waste. Needed now!
Upstate New York is on the frontline of New York’s housing crisis, and yet we are consistently left out of the conversation when we talk about solutions, especially around funding.
For decades, our communities have grappled with the impacts of skyrocketing rents and home prices and a severe shortage of affordable and workforce housing that has displaced families who can no longer afford to live here. That needs to change, which is why I am calling on the Legislature to stand up for all New Yorkers and include a record level of funding for housing in this year’s budget.
Yesterday in Albany, alongside a coalition of housing advocates and nonprofits from across the state, I announced a proposal to deliver a historic investment of $200 million in state funding to be used exclusively in rural and upstate communities so that we can build more affordable and workforce housing, create pathways to homeownership that stays truly affordable, and implement critical accessibility modifications and safety repairs so that seniors and people with disabilities can remain living independently.
I’m proud to champion this effort and am fighting during our budget negotiations to deliver this transformational level of investment to upstate residents to address our housing crisis.
