Want your kids to use their technology less?

Have alternative activities for them to enjoy: School is fast around the corner. If you have younger children; presenting them with non-digital alternatives is a big part of a solution to less digital use. Plan outings and playdates, go to a local park, or walk a trail. Oneida County has many free trails to walk on. Hodag Park also has activities throughout the summer. If going somewhere isn't available, plan and cook a meal together or even simpler, cookies!

Summertime Fame: Does your child want to be a famous streamer or YouTuber? If so, are they making lots of videos or streaming live on Youtube, Tiktok, or other social media sites? Make sure children making videos are not broadcasting where they live, their school, where they are hanging out on a daily basis, and definitely not where and when they are going on any vacations! Children should also not publicize if they are home alone online! Predators can track kids easier online when kids broadcast everything about themselves including locations and schedules. Make sure the location settings in your child's phone are turned off. Predators can show up when parents are at work or not home when personal information is posted online.

Know the signs of something going wrong:

Even with strong guidance and open communication, your child might still be in a group chats that just isn’t healthy. Here’s what to be mindful of:

-Flinching or seeming anxious when notifications arrive
-Hiding their screen when you approach
-Suddenly avoiding certain friends or social groups
-Messaging late at night
-Mood swings tied to message check-ins
-Branding or Tagging their skin

Ask open ended questions: What’s going on in the chat today?

Be there when things get tough: Let your child know they can come to you if they mess up. The internet can be deceiving and a scary place for kids when somebody who was pretending to be their friend turns on them and starts threatening them. It can also be scary for parents, but we are here to help. Do NOT blame them, they are a victim. Have a response planned and calmly let them know you will get through this. Block the bad person’s account but do NOT delete anything and report it.
