HUGE BREAKING: Republicans SHUT DOWN a discharge petition to extend healthcare subsidies EARLY – before all Democrats could vote. CHAOS ensued.
Absolute mayhem just broke out after Republicans shut down a vote on a discharge petition that would extend expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits, EARLY, before all the votes could get in, giving him an illegal "win" of ONE VOTE.
This was not some procedural snooze fest. This was about whether families keep affordable health care or lose it because the GOP panicked. And the way he did it was a bonafide CRIME.
“Crazy scenes going on in the house floor,” reported NOTUS journalist Reese Gorman. “The chair just closed the vote on ordering the previous question when it was at 204-203. Some Democrats hadn’t voted yet and were trying to vote no. They are livid rn and shouting at the chair.”
Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, Mike Lawler, Rob Bresnahan, and Ryan Mackenzie joined all 214 Democrats to sign the petition to force a vote on extending ACA tax credits for three more years. But Speaker Mike Johnson slammed the brakes and ended the vote before it was finished. Why. Because they were about to lose.
"This is a total self inflicted wound by Mike Johnson. All he had to do was give them a vote on an amendment that likely wouldn’t have passed on an extension of the subsidies with reforms."
But Johnson was too much of a Trump sycophant to let his fellow Republicans be on record yet again for killing tens of THOUSANDS of Americans by taking away affordable healthcare.
That is not democracy. That is fear.
Washington Post reporter Marianna Sotomayor laid the blame squarely on Johnson after he blocked moderates from voting on subsidy amendments last week. “The House floor is just exploding right now after Republicans closed the vote early,” she reported. “Rs really are playing with the floor right now in ways that's not usual. They're nervous.”
They are nervous because the numbers are against them. They're risking literal jail time, to get away with literal murder.
Mike Lawler said it plainly after signing. “Leadership left us no choice,” he said. “This issue is too important to f**k around with. You have people’s health care at stake, and it requires a vote.”
Health care should never be a hostage to right wing power games. This kind of procedural sabotage is straight out of the fascist playbook, and it deserves outrage, not silence.
Do NOT let them do this quietly:
