Active Minds at UTD Active Minds at UTD is a student-run nonprofit with the goal to raise mental health awareness! Active Minds is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness for mental illnesses across college campuses.

Active Minds at UTD is one of four hundred chapters across the nation, open to all students, with the goal to raise awareness about issues surrounding mental health, remove stigma surrounding mental disorders to make students feel more comfortable, and provide an open environment for students and faculty to speak about mental health and act.

Being a student can be incredibly overwhelming, and sometimes it feels like you’re being pulled in all sorts of directions at once. Carving out small periods of time for yourself and putting everything else away for a brief time can help you to clear out your mind. Mental health is important at every stage of life, including in the elder generation. Many older adults are at risk for mental health problems. Now for seniors living in nursing homes and assisted living centers, feeling lonely and socially isolated has been a side affect of corona. As a result we will be writing to seniors to let them know they’re not alone.

Hi, Comets! I hope you are staying healthy, physically, and mentally. This "new normal" can take a toll on anyone, and we want to make sure you have all the tools to cope with stress, anxiety, and depression.
Please use these free resources or provide them to a loved one who might need it.
Taoconnect.org is therapy assistance online, it is free for all the students, but they have made resources available open to the public at this time, so please pass it along to everyone to take advantage of this service.
The Disaster Distress Helpline had an increase of 338% in call volume compared with February, so there is no we are in tough times.
Here are a few reminders and suggestions on things to do to help us with our mental health

• Stay active- There are many free workout videos on YouTube; this will help you get natural stimulants, the so-called endorphins!
• Get enough sleep - Lack of sleep can affect your health.
• Stay Hydrated
• Create a schedule - This will help you have a new structure; if you write it down, it will help you stick to it. Also, have incentives for each day, ask yourself how do you want to feel.
• Set a limit on social media
• Stay connected with your loved ones and ask them how they are feeling, perhaps they are feeling down and need some cheering, and maybe we can give them a helping hand. Helping others also gives us happiness.
• Learn something new- We have LinkedIn Learning available to us for free; we can learn a new skill or sharpen our existing abilities.
• Laughter brings happiness- According to nutritionist and author Pamela Smith, 100 laughs a day provide cardiovascular workout equal to about 10 minutes of biking. Another benefit is that it stimulates stress release in the same way we exercise. (American Behavior Scientist, 1996, 39:249)
