Did you know about Black American Sign Language?

Meet Nakia Smith a.k.a. Charmay. She's the 4th deaf generation of five generations — she is here to inject some knowledge in our veins about BASL and how the dialect is so different from standard ASL.

Get to know me: Adina began working with students who have disabilities as an intern with the disability services office at UT Austin in 2012. At UT, she supported accommodated testing operations, proctored exams, and trained students on the use of adaptive technology such as screen readers. Adina was active in the disability community as the leader of the UT Disability Advocacy Student Coalition, and a membership coordinator for Best Buddies. She worked there for 3 years while pursuing her undergraduate degree in Special Education. She then worked as a teacher in Austin and in the DFW area before becoming the Adaptive Testing Coordinator. Adina loves chocolate, exploring new places, getting lost in books, trying new ethnic cuisine, and most of all spend time with loved ones.

What do yall think?!?!

Could disability be further included in diversity efforts?

What do yall think?!?!

Colleges and universities are making progress on efforts to serve disabled students, but some advocates and scholars say higher ed has been slow to recognize disability as an identity group or include it in programming around diversity and inclusion.
