Founded in 1984, the Bengali Association of Dallas - Fort Worth (BA-DFW) is the premier non-profit Bengali organization of North Texas. Since 1984, Bengali Association of Dallas - Fort Worth (BA-DFW) has been North Texas' original and largest Bengali organization promoting Indian and South Asian cultural activities that are open to all.
(64)
Activities include Bangla School, Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja, Film Festivals, Annual Picnics, Concerts, and more. BA-DFW also actively supports charitable institutions such as the Salvation Army, North Texas Food Bank, and the Red Cross.
Mission: For over 30 years now, we have represented the Bengali community of the Dallas/ Ft Worth metropolis. Our mission is to promote a harmonious blend of our diverse culture and rich values with today's hi-tech, fast-paced, success-driven way of life - with a view to nurturing well-balanced, exemplary new generations who will continue to be role models and enrich the world in greater measure. Our fundamental objectives are: To organize cultural events, socio-religious functions and activities, which provide exposure to the culture, heritage and traditions of Bengal To promote and sustain religious, charitable, educational and literary activities on behalf of the Bengali community To provide a forum for exchanging ideas and views with various national and international organizations of similar interests We are committed to sustaining and promoting our culture and heritage, supporting the society we live in and reinforcing our future generation with meaningful values. We strive to keep our rich culture and heritage alive through various religious events, social and educational activities and cultural programs throughout the year. We run an autonomous Bengali language school, to provide our kids the unique opportunity to learn and maintain proficiency in the language. We conduct regular fund raising activities for our community support and social service goals to assist the needy in India, Bangladesh and the United States. We renew our festive spirits, following true Bengali traditions - our celebrations of Durga Puja in fall, Saraswati Puja in spring are attended in large numbers. We attempt to bring the community together and keep them actively involved in various social events throughout the year - whether it is the Bengali New Year, our summer picnic gala, or the year-end dine-n-dance party. We have consistently been among the most culturally active cities in the United States, regularly hosting popular artists from India, screening popular Bengali movies and presenting high-quality cultural programs by local talents of all ages.

Please join us in this tribute to the iconic legend, as we celebrate his multi- faceted body of work! Don’t miss the exclusive interviews with co-actors, collaborators, directors and family members who knew him up close and personal! What better way to reminisce the life and influence of this truly inter-generational artist extraordinaire!
Live on our FB pages, at 10:15am CST this Sunday, 29th November.
In how many ways can one mourn the colossal loss of the iconic Soumitra Chatterjee? His prodigious talent has been hailed by critics; his colleagues have spoken of his discipline and dedication. But to followers of Bengali cinema, he was that rare persona - the intellectual actor who bridged the gap between stardust and reality, and an inter-generational artist!
Actor, orator, playwright, poet, thespian - there are many remarkable ways to remember Soumitra Chatterjee. But one way perhaps to honor his life, work, and profound impact on Bengali culture - with respect and gratitude!
Please join us, as we pay homage to this legendary personality ~ a FB-Live virtual event in collaboration with DFW-Play! Accessible on our FB pages.

RIP Jahar da!! Our deepest condolences to Shuvra di and family!!
We mourn the passing of one of our founder members and a much respected senior community leader, Mr. JAHAR NANDI. We pray for our beloved Jahar-da's soul to rest in eternal peace!
Jahar Nandi - (Eulogy contributed by Sasvata Chatterjee) -
They came quietly. A family of four - husband, wife, and two little boys - moved from Chicago to Fort Worth. The epicenter of the small Bengali community of DFW at that time was Fort Worth. Little did that community know what an impact this family would have on them. Neither does the Bengali community here today realize that they are beneficiaries of the legacy of the Nandi family - Jahar, Shubhra, and the two boys we know as Boomba and Piku.
Jaharda, as he is universally known, a Civil Engineering graduate from Jadavpur University, moved here as an employee at Commanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant, under construction at the time. The vast majority of the Bengali families had a wage earner at that plant, and the community was tight-knit as a result. As with Bengalis everywhere, a thriving cultural scene existed, albeit in people’s homes, complete with Saraswati and Durga Pujas. In 1984 a loosely structured association started to come together, and the events moved to school gymnasiums as the community grew. By 1987-88, when Jaharda came to DFW, the community was growing and it was apparent that a formally structured association would need to be formed.
The primary cheerleader behind forming an association was none other than Jaharda. Fresh from his experience at BAGC in Chicago, Jaharda provided valuable insight. Collaborating with two others from the community, a new constitution loosely based on the BAGC constitution was written and soon the formal Bengali Association of Dallas Fort Worth - BA-DFW - came into being.
The thriving BA-DFW of today, that we all belove, and which provides the Bengali cultural anchor to the community, will forever be indebted to Jaharda. He was involved in the organization of events as a committee member of BA-DFW for multiple terms, and there is nothing that he did not do. Being as unassuming as he was, Jaharda only became President much later when the association had a dire need for strong leadership. Not only BA-DFW, but Jaharda selflessly gave himself equally to the Jadavpur University Alumni Association and the Vedanta Society of DFW.
An ever-smiling humble man, Jaharda was known for standing in earnest by any who needed even the slightest bit of assistance. Once the association was on firm footing, Jaharda moved on to his other passion, organizing and participating in many a play that was presented during Puja. The one thing we can never forget though was Jaharda’s utter delight in children. There’s not a baby, that was born between the late eighties and nineties, that didn’t spend a part of Puja in his arms.
We lost Jaharda to a long-lasting illness this Monday. Jaharda, you have departed physically, but you’ll never be able to leave BA-DFW.
