Check this out! In Campbell ISD, second-grade teacher Beckie Rodgers went to great lengths to set up a “Surgery Center” where students did “surgery” on sentences! Her class spent the past 20 days working on a narrative writing unit, where she tied in the theme of medicine!
To conclude the unit with a "big bang", Rodgers set six stations up-one was strictly just imaginative play, where they engaged in taking each other's blood pressure and listening to heartbeats with real equipment. Five stations were complete/incomplete sentences, silly writing using medical terms like "stretcher" and "ambulance", capitalizing, punctuation, and such as this. One of the stations was set for narrative writing prompts.
Rodgers had given the students a little hint the day before that something big was planned, and they were so excited when they got to see it all!
"They seemed to thoroughly enjoy the day, the giggles and laughter were priceless," shared Rodgers. "I thoroughly enjoy going above and beyond for my students to help them love learning, especially for something as necessary and challenging as teaching writing."
This week, Region 10 ESC College, Career & Military Readiness held the Education and Industry Summit! School district leaders had the opportunity to connect with professionals from a wide array of industries in order to help bridge the gap between education and industry!

When Heather Sumner, mom to twins Hailie and Olivia, was looking for a program to prepare her daughters for Kindergarten, the Head Start Program at Lawson in McKinney came highly recommended since Olivia could do both the Head Start and Special Ed. Program at the school. "Olivia has the best group of teachers I have ever seen," shared Sumner. "They have helped Olivia with her confidence. The first day of school I was really hesitant to send Olivia, but thankfully Ms. Michelle was sending me pictures all day as soon as I left. By the third day, Olivia was walking in by herself confident and prepared. I've really enjoyed working with everybody here." While many mentor-mentee relationships are 1-on-1, mentors Ashley (left) and Allison (right) from Maypearl ISD have taken a unique approach by working as a mentor teacher duo! They sat down with Region 10 Mentor Teacher Consultant Shari Dawson to talk about their experience! “It naturally happened, it wasn’t something that we planned,” shares Allison, “It started working really well.” An unplanned approach that has addressed time constraints and improved availability among their mentees, it has turned into a collaborative environment for all! “We love working together and bouncing ideas off of each other,” shares Ashley, “We wanted to make our own team so that we can do more collaboration.” “They definitely feel more supported, and they feel that team atmosphere.” she shares, “Even knowing just one more person on the campus makes them feel more comfortable in their first year here. They can come to either of us.”
