UT Dallas Mourns Loss of Philanthropist, Arts Patron Edith O’Donnell

Edith O’Donnell, one of Texas’ — and The University of Texas at Dallas’ — most generous philanthropists and a strong proponent of education, science and the arts, died Nov. 14 at the age of 94.

Over the past 60 years, O’Donnell and her husband, Peter O’Donnell, have contributed quietly and substantially to educational and arts establishments in Texas. At UT Dallas in 2013, the Edith O’Donnell Arts and Technology Building was dedicated in her honor. The following year, she made a $17 million gift to establish the Edith O’Donnell Institute of Art History.

Known for their civic and business leadership, the couple established the O’Donnell Foundation in 1957. That foundation has played an enormous role in advancing education and scientific research. Their contributions over the years to UT Dallas alone total more than $39 million.

The University remembers Edith O’Donnell, one of UT Dallas' most generous supporters whose gifts established the institute for art history and bolstered the ATEC programs in the building that bears her name.

Helen Arceneaux Region 10 Teacher of the Year

Helen Arceneaux, UTeach Dallas Alum, RISD Liberty JH STEM Academy Science Teacher Named Region 10 Secondary Teacher of the Year

“What makes Mrs. Arceneaux so great is that she makes science come alive for her students. She makes it fun, engaging, and entertaining,” Liberty Principal Cecilia Galvan said. “Furthermore, she trusts her students to navigate their own learning.”
Arceneaux moves on to the state competition after finishing first among 113 teachers from the 63 school districts that are a part of Texas Education Agency Region 10.
“While we are all nervous about what education will look like during and after the waves of COVID-19, I am very proud to be a member of this profession who never quits and who is always ready to serve our nation’s children,” Arceneaux said. “I believe that in our hearts we strive to relieve as much inequity as we can – always endeavoring to do better.”
Congratulations, Helen!

I'm Daniel, a senior majoring in math. I plan on becoming a high school math teacher. I would love to teach at my old high school and give back to the community that raised me.

I love UTeach Dallas because it allowed me to discover my passion for teaching. When I transferred to UTD, I only knew that I wanted to major in math, but I had no plan for after graduation. After taking a few UTeach Dallas classes, I realized how exciting and rewarding teaching could be and I decided to pursue teaching as career.

As you plan for next year, it’s helpful to know the right terminology... Homeschool and Online School are not the same...

Texas Education Vocabulary for 20-21

Homeschool = your student is not enrolled in any public, charter, or private school and you have committed, as the parent, to provide all instruction yourself

Online School or School-at-Home = your student is enrolled in a public, private, or charter school and is accessing their schoolwork from home electronically

Synchronous Instruction = your online school student is learning at the same time as their peers who go to the brick-and-mortar building to learn

Asynchronous Instruction = your online school student will learn the same concepts as their peers but on their own time (must log in every day, however)

Hybrid Instruction = half online and half traditional... TEA is not allowing schools to choose this option due to complications it creates (scheduling, cleaning, attendance, etc)

We are incredibly proud of our Project Based Instruction Class! For their final project, they partnered with the Dallas Zoo to create interdisciplinary STEM lessons for Metroplex area teachers and students. These lessons were based on the zoo's "Saving the 12" animal conservation efforts. Our teams of preservice teachers presented their lessons virtually today to a group of education and animal specialists from the Zoo. Dallas Zoo Staff, Thanks so much for joining us on our educational journey and taking time out to invest in the future of STEM education! Dallas Zoo
