When wildfires forced Spokane families out of their homes, local restaurants didn't wait to be asked. Queen of Sheba Ethiopian Cuisine, Feast World Kitchen, and Nuestras Raíces Centro Comunitario all opened their kitchens to feed evacuees and first responders this weekend, free of charge.

: H.R. 8700 - Protecting U.S. Farmland and Sensitive Sites From Foreign Adversaries Act

A bipartisan bill would let CFIUS block farmland and land sales near ports, power plants, and military sites when China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, or Venezuela are buying. Supporters say it closes a security and food security gap. Opponents warn it could slow legitimate land sales and expand federal reach into a state-regulated area.

Inflation's monthly pace slowed to 0.1% in July, but prices are still up 3.4% over the past year, and small businesses are still paying more. Beef and fuel costs remain elevated, and retail sales just posted their first monthly drop in months.

Families are feeling it too. Wages are growing more slowly than prices again, gas is still nearly 25% higher than a year ago, and groceries remain up despite the monthly dip.

Interesting to note that lower-income households spent more in July while higher-income households pulled back, reversing a pattern that had held for years.

The Supreme Court cleared the way Monday for Trump's mail-in voting order, pausing a lower court block ahead of the midterms. The order has DHS compile voter lists and requires USPS to deliver ballots only to people on them. The Court didn't rule on legality, just let it proceed for now.

Democrats warn of chaos and partisan abuse. The administration and backing states call it election integrity.

A reporting rule that could have cost small businesses up to $591 a day in penalties just disappeared.

Treasury ended the Corporate Transparency Act's mandatory ownership reporting rule for U.S. companies. It's real relief, but it came from an agency rule, not a law, so a future administration could bring it back. That's why H.R. 425 and S. 100 are pending in Congress to permanently repeal the requirement.

Supporters, including Treasury Secretary Bessent, call it overdue relief from a costly mandate. Opponents, including Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), a bipartisan pair, say the rollback undermines a law meant to detect money laundering and shell-company abuse.

: S.3283 - Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025

Should American citizens be barred from holding any other citizenship? S.3283 would ban dual citizenship, giving current dual citizens one year to renounce the foreign citizenship or lose U.S. citizenship, with no choice made counting as automatic relinquishment.

Sponsor Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) says divided allegiance creates conflicts of interest. Opponents say it could strip citizenship from people who became dual nationals automatically at birth.

Social Security's trust fund could run short by late 2032, paying out only 78 percent of scheduled benefits without a fix. Senators are floating three main approaches: the bipartisan PROMISE Act, which would fast-track a congressional vote on a 50-year solvency plan; raising or eliminating the payroll tax cap on high earners; and applying payroll tax to income above $250,000, including investment income.

A 50 percent tariff on Canadian goods like hockey sticks, wine and cement could take effect at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday if trade talks stall. The tariffs only touch about 5 percent of U.S.-Canada trade, but small businesses that source lumber, dairy and other goods from Canada say the added cost lands on customers first, deal or no deal.

NWYC is celebrating Kendall Livingston and the team at GCI, Inc. in Hobbs, New Mexico, an NWYC member since 2009.

During a recent visit by his NWYC sales rep, Gary Hays, Kendall called his four office staff into the room and asked each one, in turn, whether they were responding to their advocacy emails and to Congress. Only one was doing it regularly. Kendall challenged the whole team to start, and every one of them agreed to reach out to Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández, Senator Ben Ray Luján, and Senator Martin Heinrich going forward.
