Habitat Restoration

The process of restoring a habitat to its original form takes time, effort, and great care. The first step focuses on the removal of non-native species, specifically invasive offenders such as Buckthorn.

Buckthorn overshadows the native flora by blooming earlier in the spring. They alter the composition of the soil and aggressively spread a dense seed bank to favor their own growth. Furthermore, they offer little environmental benefit as compared to the historic residents.

We are excited to share that after removing thousands of buckthorn trees from the northwest side of Upper Lake, we revealed a wonderful discovery!

Beneath that dense thicket, several young native trees—including fledgling Oaks, Black Cherry, American Beech, Shagbark Hickory, Flowering Dogwood, and many more, were struggling to reach the sun. They now had the opportunity to spread their leaves and welcome the freedom to grow.

And then the magic came!

Along the gentle rise of land, the denizen plants, shrubs, and wildflowers erupted, adding their beauty and color to the sensitive forest floor. Specimens such as Skunk Cabbage, Arrowwood Viburnum, Common Blue Violet, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Sensitive Fern, and Wild Geranium, to name a few, made their glorious appearance.

These improvements to the landscape are ongoing and we appreciate your patience and mindfulness as we strive to reestablish the natural areas within the Richfield Heritage Preserve.

Finding Joy in Watercolor
A Landscape Painting Retreat at Richfield Heritage Preserve
October 12-16, 2026

Spend a week immersed in watercolor and the quiet beauty of Richfield Heritage Preserve, a lush landscape of forested trails and reflective lakes in northeast Ohio. This inspiring setting invites artists to slow down, look closely, and translate the landscape into watercolor.
Open to artists of all levels, this retreat blends studio learning with outdoor painting. Through demonstrations, guided sessions, and thoughtful discussion, you’ll explore ways to simplify complex scenes and capture light, atmosphere, and a sense of place. Each day balances instruction with time for exploration. Mornings introduce essential watercolor concepts and techniques, while afternoons are spent painting along wooded trails and lakeshores with individualized guidance to support each artist’s unique approach.
