Search and Rescue Dashboard

The Utah Search and Rescue Advisory board has dashboard to visualize the impact search and rescue has across the State of Utah. Since 1997 search and rescue teams have been able to seek reimbursement for the cost of search and rescue efforts. Reimbursement is broken down into three categories: searches, training, and equipment. The dashboard shows the types of activities and which county they were in.
The dashboard shows how much has been reimbursed statewide since 1997, and can be broken down to individual counties. These teams have provided over 1.3 million documented hours of service to our state. These volunteers are truly a great asset to each county.

For immediate release

On 8-26-26 at 0815 hours a call was broadcast to assist Adult Probation & Parole agents for a barricaded subject. Jared Grundy (46,Monroe,UT) had barricaded himself in the downstairs area of his home. Grundy refused to cooperate with the agents. Agents had an order to show cause for probation violations and intended to take Grundy into custody. Sevier County deputies assisted with the arrest. Grundy had barricaded a door and when deputies came into the house he retreated to a cold storage room where he had a loaded .22 caliber rifle and made several threats to shoot and kill officers. At approximately 10:30 hours Grundy was talked out of the storage room and taken into custody. Grundy was checked by EMS, and then taken to the Sevier County Jail.
Charges include Threat of violence against a peace officer, enhanced to a second-degree felony due to the loaded gun. Possession of a firearm by a restricted person, also a second-degree felony. Grundy is on probation for a prior felony assault.
In the process, South Sevier High School was placed in secure operations due to the residence being across the street from the high school and students being on campus. We appreciate our partners who were able to resolve the situation with minimal disruption and no loss of life.

Helicopter incident update

The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with state and federal partners, successfully recovered the remains of two individuals from a firefighting helicopter crash site near the Widemouth 2 Fire on August 8, 2026, following a treacherous, high-elevation operation. While the remains have been transferred to the Utah medical examiner’s office for identification, the NTSB and FAA are investigating the cause, which is being delayed by hazardous, active wildfire conditions surrounding the wreckage.
The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office offers our sincerest condolences to the families, loved ones, and coworkers affected by the loss of life.
Special thanks to the agencies who worked with us: Utah Highway Patrol DPS Aero Bureau, Fishlake National Forest, the Wide Mouth Fire incident management team, and the Great Basin Team 2, the operation was successful due to great teamwork.
