🦌 DON’T VEER FOR DEER! 🚒

Oh, Deer! 🦌 We’re entering the time of year when deer tend to be the most active in Michigan. While Bambi might be cute, meeting him on the roadway at 55 mph is no fairy tale! Here are a few reminders to help keep you safe:

🚗 Minimize distractions. Continuously scan the road ahead for hazards, including deer. Keep your eyes on the road, not on your phone!

🦌 If you see one deer, slow down! There are likely more nearby. Deer rarely travel alone, and unfortunately, they don’t always use the crosswalk.

⚠️ Never veer for deer! Swerving to avoid a deer could result in a much more severe collision with another vehicle, a tree, or even a rollover accident. As tempting as it may be to avoid Bambi, your safety comes first!

🌅 Be extra cautious during dawn and dusk. Deer tend to be more active during these times, so keep an extra eye out.

What if a collision is unavoidable?

If a collision with a deer is unavoidable, brake firmly. Once you have stopped, carefully pull your vehicle onto the shoulder of the roadway and turn on your hazard lights.

🚨 If you strike a deer and are injured in the accident, call 911.

📞 If you strike a deer and are uninjured, call the dispatch nonemergency number. Advise the dispatcher of any roadway hazards, whether there are any fluids leaking from your vehicle, and whether the deer is still alive and injured.

Kalamazoo County Consolidated Dispatch Nonemergency:
📱 269-488-8911

Remember: Deer don’t understand traffic laws, and they certainly don’t check both ways before crossing!

Stay alert. Stay safe. And remember — DON’T VEER FOR DEER! 🦌🚒

RAFD members took part in a First Responder Luncheon hosted by GraceSpring Bible Church.

This event was a great opportunity to come together with members of the military, fire service, EMS, and other first responders who all share a common goal—serving our communities while also taking care of one another.

Thank you to GraceSpring Bible Church for hosting and for showing your support and appreciation for those who serve!

Another great time teaching fire safety at Kellogg Elementary School! 🚒🔥

Today we covered some important fire safety lessons, including how working smoke alarms save lives, the importance of having a family escape plan and meeting spot, and remembering that once you’re out, stay out!

We talked about these topics and many more to help our students understand what they can do to keep themselves and their families safe.

A big thank you to Kellogg Elementary for having us! We always enjoy spending time with the students and talking about fire safety. 🚒🏠🔥

🔥 Happy Sunday! 🔥

Today kicks off 2026 Fire Prevention Week!

This week is a great opportunity to take a look around your home and talk with your family about the simple steps that can help keep everyone fire safe.

🔋 This year’s focus: Safe Charging!

With the rapid growth of rechargeable electronics and lithium-ion battery-powered products, safe charging habits are more important than ever.

⚡ Purchase electronics, batteries, and chargers from reputable manufacturers and look for products listed by a recognized testing laboratory, such as UL, ETL, or CSA.

⚡ Use the charger designed or approved for your device.

⚡ Charge devices on a hard, flat surface—not on beds, couches, or other soft surfaces.

⚡ When possible, charge and store larger items such as e-bikes and e-scooters outside, away from exits, doors, and windows.

⚡ Stop using batteries that are damaged, swollen, unusually hot, leaking, smoking, or giving off a strange odor.

🏠 And don’t forget the basics of home fire safety:

✅ Have properly placed and working smoke alarms throughout your home.

✅ Have working carbon monoxide alarms.

✅ Create and practice a family fire escape plan, including:
• Two ways out of every room whenever possible
• A designated family meeting place outside
• Making sure everyone knows: Once you’re out, stay out!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Talk with your kids about fire safety, too:

• How and when to call 911
• Knowing their home address
• What to do if a smoke alarm sounds
• The importance of sleeping with bedroom doors closed — “Close Before You Doze”

A few simple conversations and safety checks can make a lifesaving difference when seconds matter.

🎃 And don’t forget about our Annual Haunted House! 👻

Join us Saturday, October 31st from 1:00–4:00 PM for an afternoon of Halloween fun at the fire department. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

🔥 Protect the ones you love. Stay alert, stay prepared, and stay fire safe! 🔥

RAFD sure has been busy! In the last 13 days, our Firefighters have responded to 36 calls for service. These calls for service are in addition to training and public relation event’s.

Our department has currently responded to 474 calls, to date.

At this same time, last year, we were at 385 calls for service. Last year was our busiest year with a year total of 512 calls for service.

We are currently 93 calls ahead of schedule for this year, with 3 months remaining.

We want to give a public shout out to our Firefighters. These calls represent a person in need, potentially having one of their worst days. They may be our neighbors, visitors to our community, or travelers going through our community. These calls also represent our Firefighters readiness to drop what they are doing to respond quickly, safely, and with skill to perform their required tasks.

RAFD remains ready to respond in a moments notice. We love this community we serve, and we are committed to answering the calls for service.

The pictures attached to this post are the many faces of our department, each face is a valued member of this department, that have gone through extensive training to serve our community. They have sacrificed time with family, friends, and missed events and meals. Yet, they continue to answer each call, ready to serve for those in need.

Have a great Friday, Facebook and stay safe!
