Hanford cleanup isn’t just about people. It’s about protecting the wildlife that calls this landscape home.

Every step forward in cleanup helps preserve habitat for generations to come. Today it’s a curious porcupine visiting our Richland office. Tomorrow it could be any of the countless species that share this unique landscape.

Cleanup today. Wildlife tomorrow.

🌱Riparian rare plants such as Lipocarpha aristulata, Oenothera cespitosa, Rorippa columbiae, and Rotala ramosoir are sensitive or threatened plants at the Hanford Site.

🌱Several of these species are threatened by changes in the management of Columbia River hydraulic cycles.

🌱If these plants are submerged during the seasons when they would typically be producing flowers and seeds, their viability to survive is lowered considerably.

This week we invited the Fun, Fit, and Over Fifty Club to try on the hat of a Hanford regulator with the Mock Hanford Workshop.

Ten club members worked through scenarios focused on the waste treatment, water pollution, and communications aspects of the tank waste mission.

Teams worked with Ecology staff to build outcomes that were protective of human health and the environment while reflecting community values.

Thank you to the club for spending the afternoon with us!

📅On Aug. 27, 1943 construction on the water-cooling facilities in the B-Reactor area began.

💧The design of the water supply for each of the reactor areas resembled a large municipal plant.

🚣🏼‍♀️Each would have a river pump house, large storage and settling basins, a filtration plant, huge motor-driven pumps for delivering water to the face of the reactor, and facilities for emergency cooling in case of a power failure.
