Last week, we hosted our second annual DOE Mile Run/Walk. 🏃🏻🚶🏾

PNNL's Innovation Boulevard was closed so staff could get outside and participate in the DOE-wide event focused on heath and wellness.

The DOE Mile was held across 18 other national laboratory campuses (in-person and virtually) throughout the month of May.

For the last five years, PNNL systems engineer Brooke Marten has volunteered more than 100 hours with the Wildlands Restoration Volunteers.

Marten, who lives in Boulder, Colorado, helps with native seed collection, trail building, invasive species management, and habitat creation across the state.

“I love spending time outdoors and I’m an avid user of Colorado’s public lands, so volunteering feels like a tangible way to give back to the places I value,” said Marten.

Volunteering gives Marten a practical reality check for the environmental outcomes and engineered-system tradeoffs she evaluates at PNNL.

“It’s a reminder that even the best-designed systems run into real feasibility constraints like weather, access, labor, safety, and site conditions,” explains Marten. “It also builds the people-and-project skills that make technical work effective—showing up prepared, integrating quickly into a team, communicating clearly across backgrounds, and staying adaptable when plans change.”
