Our Story
We organized during the month of March, 1986, having our first meeting on a Thursday night. Minutes for the early meetings have been lost; so we do not remember all who were the first, or charter, members. Our dues were set at $5.00 for the individual, $7.50, for a family membership and a Junior Friends membership was, if memory serves, a mere $2.00. One of our most popular fund-raising events was our annual “Big Rummage Sale.” It took place on a Saturday in September and the first one was on the parking lot of a local grocery store. Shoppers arrived before dawn and we pulled a few of our cars close enough and turned headlights on so we could have light. We learned a lot about how to have such a sale for the next years. We can’t remember just how many of these, “Big Rummage Sales,” we had; but, we averaged about one thousand dollars each time. With those funds, we were able to purchase a much-needed camera and other items. One big ticket item we funded was a sound system for the meeting room at the library including a mic with mic stand and two speakers. It was well used for many years.
An early event we sponsored was a, “Senior Appreciation Day Luncheon,” in the meeting room. This annual event was usually at noon on a spring day sometime in April or May. We always had a good attendance for this event and, in addition to our catering the luncheon with our own time-honored recipes, we had some kind of entertainment. One time, a local young man currently serving as a state senator in the Capitol in Jackson, Mississippi, presented a musical program that was enjoyed by everyone. Senator Rob Smith had not yet become one of our Lifetime Members; but, he always supported the library and Richland Library in particular. Sadly, he passed away a little over a year ago and he has been much missed.
