Back Swamp VFD would like to congratulate 4 of our members on successfully passing Coastal Carolina Community College Fire Academy. James Crouch, Dale Combs, Tyler Johnson, & Benjamin Jaeger. They have endured over 300 hours of classroom and hands on training events. These gentlemen are now certified fire fighters and will serve your community with the proper training set forth by the OSFM. Due to COVID restrictions they were not able to participate in a formal graduation where members of the department would formally congratulate them. We would like to take this time to say congratulations, and job well done!

Also Mr. Jaeger was the Academic Award winner of the class, holding the highest GPA!

Over the past several months members from Back Swamp Volunteer Fire Department have been working hard to prepare for our North Carolina OSFM (Office of State Fire Marshal) Ratings and Inspection process. This is an inspection that helps home owners and business owners save money on their insurance. Our department provided our records for training, maintenance, responses and even included a training event for the inspector. Our department was rated 6 out of 10 prior to the inspection on a scale of 10 being the highest. I am happy to announce that our new ratings came back and your Back Swamp Volunteer Fire Department is now an ISO 4/9E! This is great news for our community and shows the diligence of the men and women of this department.

I would also like to take this time to recognize our Fire Chief, Chief Charles Fountain. Chief Fountain worked continuously to pave this road to success and is a key contributing factor to our new rating. He is an amazing leader and a great asset to our community. Thank you Chief!

If you need smoke detectors installed in your house all of the Onslow County fire departments have teamed up with the American Red Cross. You can call them to set up a time where your local fire department will come and install smoke detectors.

Smoke detectors save lives!!!

IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE PLEASE READ, WATCH THE VIDEO, AND SHARE.

On Sunday, February 23rd at approximately 12:34 AM, the Joplin Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire with people possibly still inside. A Joplin Police Department officer in the neighborhood patroling arrived at the same time we were getting the call and was able to assist all occupants out of the structure through the back door. Fortunately, there were no injuries during this fire and the family has agreed to allow us to share security video from the fire to help share important safety information.

The video we obtained from this fire drives home the importance of equipping your home with smoke alarms, developing escape plans with your family in the event of a fire, and also how quickly a fire can spread. The video begins in the living room with a small child sleeping on the sofa. The fire was an accidental fire that originated on the front porch and then being wind driven advanced quickly and breeched into the home blocking the front door and stairwell almost immediately. The small child can be heard coughing while she sleeps from smoke that is entering the home and even sleeps through the fire breaching into the front of the house. This home was protected by a fire alarm system that when activated set off an audible alarm and advised there was a fire in the house. This woke the small child who reacted immediately by escaping the other direction, which according to family members is what they taught her. The video ends showing the entire family exiting the back of the house to safety as the entire family was awakened by the alarm going off.

This family was in real danger of being trapped and/or overcome by smoke and fire due to how quickly it was advancing. It took just a few seconds to become a free burning fire that had blocked the stairwell and front exit. If the alarm had not sounded it is possible that the family would not have have had time to escape to safety.

Please ask yourself these questions: Does your home have functioning smoke detectors? Have you taught your children what to do if there is a fire? What is your backup plan if you can't get out of a house? This could very well save your life.

We want to sincerely thank this family for allowing us to share their video of this during their time of tragedy so that we can possibly save others. We also want to thank them for taking the steps necessary to ensure the safety of their family when their fire occurred.

A special thank you to all those who are currently and those who have served in our military in this great nation.

We take extreme pride in our nation, state, and communities we live in, and if it wasn’t for our strong men and women who willingly put their life on the line for others; we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the freedom we have.

Our department has many members that are currently going above and beyond. While serving our country active duty they also serve as an active member of the fire department. We thank you for what you do.

A huge shout out to the Domino’s in Richlands. Such an amazing group of people to team up with.

Thank you to all the families that let our members in to your lovely homes and provide fire inspections and to test tour smoke detectors.

Please remember In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Prevention Week to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire.

Tonight Back Swamp members are teaming up with Domino's Pizza in Richlands selecting random customers in our district to possibly receive a FREE pizza! The customers that are selected randomly are offered to have the fire department deliver their pizza and have a free home fire inspection and smoke detector test. We even have the opportunity to provide smoke detectors if we found a faulty one.

This is all in reference to National Fire Prevention week. We are trying to reach out to the public as much as we can to spread the importance of fire prevention. Thank you for all the support from the public and our members.

On Saturday members around the county kicked off this years fire prevention by educating the public of all ages on fire safety at Lowe’s on Western Blvd, and Yopp Rd.

Today, Back Swamp members along with Richlands Volunteer Fire Department and Rhodestown Volunteer Fire Department were at the Heritage elementary school teaching fire prevention. Students participated in a lecture based class which comprised of smoke detector operations, creating a safe meeting point for your family, stop drop and roll, Get out and stay out. The children also tried on fire fighter turn out gear and even got to spray a fire hose!

Thank you to all that came out today and supported the learning environment that could potentially save a life!

365.

365 days of the year we respond when we are called upon. No matter what time it is or how the weather is outside. We will come. Tonight our members were out training on our apparatus to prepare themselves for when our pagers are set off. The members that are eligible to become drivers, partake in a thorough driver operator program which standardizes our drivers through out our department. You may have seen us driving around our district tonight. We had members training on Engine 105, Tanker 107, and Service 111. If you should see us, give us a wave!! Or stop by the station and we will show you around!

While our drivers were training our newer members participated in ladder training held by our Captain Randy Thon.

We now know the following included the Back Swamp Volunteer Fire Department. Thank you so much. On Tuesday night my family's house caught fire. I was at work but my husband was home with our 8 y.o. son. They got out of the house safely with the dog and my husband called 911. Soon after from all directions help started arriving. We are not sure exactly how many departments showed up, but showed up they did. And then spent the next little bit fighting to save our house. It is really an amazing feeling knowing that you can dial 3 numbers and total strangers will come and put their lives on the line to help you. And ask nothing in return. We want to thank everyone that showed up from the bottom of our hearts. It is truly reassuring knowing that this community has the people that they do volunteering the way they do. So thank you again.
