Smoky Conditions in Northeast Ohio

Residents of Northeast Ohio are advised that smoke from Canadian wildfires has drifted into our region, creating hazy skies and reduced air quality. These conditions may persist intermittently over the coming days, depending on wind patterns.

What You May Notice
• Hazy skies and reduced visibility
• Smoky odor outdoors
• Air Quality Index (AQI) readings in the unhealthy range for sensitive groups

Health Guidance
• Sensitive groups (children, older adults, and those with heart or lung conditions) should limit outdoor activity.
• Keep windows and doors closed when possible.
• Use air conditioning or air purifiers if available.
• If you must be outdoors, consider wearing a N95 mask to reduce smoke inhalation.
• Seek medical attention if you experience shortness of breath, chest pain, or severe coughing.

Where can I check air quality updates?
• AirNow.gov for real time Air Quality Index (AQI)
• Local news and weather outlets

Congratulations, Annette! Well deserved.

Shaker Heights Police Department congratulates Annette Wallace, recipient of the 2026 Helping Hands Public Service Award.

Annette coordinates the First CALL — Crisis Assistance and Local Linkage — Program, an innovative crisis-response model serving five municipalities and helping transform how communities respond to mental health and substance use-related calls.

Through strategic call screening and a tiered response approach, mental health professionals can respond independently to lower-risk situations or partner with police and fire when additional support is needed.

Programs like First CALL strengthen public safety by connecting people in crisis with the right resources at the right time, while allowing officers and first responders to work alongside trained behavioral health professionals when appropriate.

We thank Annette Wallace for her leadership, service, and commitment to improving crisis response throughout our community and Cuyahoga County.

Congratulations, Annette, on this well-deserved recognition.
